Edward "Stretch" Galten

AGE: 89 • Lake Shawnee

Edward (Stretch) Galten, 89, of Lake Shawnee passed peacefully in his sleep on Dec. 9, 2013. Born in Hoboken, he lived in Wood Ridge before moving to Lake Shawnee in 1959. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Helen Marcella (2006).

Ed played basketball and was an avid swimmer in high school. He graduated from Northeastern University. He was a computer systems analyst at Western Electric, retiring in 1979. He enjoyed his retirement. His hobbies included reading, playing golf and visiting friends and relatives.

Ed was a member of Lake Shawnee Senior Citizens, Bowling Green Golf Club, Telephone Pioneers, and a lifetime member of Masonic Lodge 259, Rutherford.

Survived by his devoted nieces, who will miss him more than words can say, Nancy Hayunga, Paramus, NJ, Joan McGrath, Westminster, MD, Patricia Ann Knowles, Las Cruces, NM, Carol Vanore, Ramsey, NJ, Kathy Knowles, Lehigh Acres, FL, Ruth Irwin, Boalsburg, PA, Susan Mercurio, Lehigh Acres, FL, nephew William Galten, Berlin, MD, many great nieces and nephews, and sister in law Kathleen Knowles, Lehigh Acres, Fl. Predeceased by his treasured brother, William, cherished sister Edna Hayunga and adored niece Marcella Knowles.

Donations in his memory may be sent to Aunt Mary's Doghouse, 8 Union Brick Rd, Blairstown, NJ 07825 and The Last Resort, 139 Point Breeze Dr., Hewitt, NJ 07421. Cremation was private. Interment will be at a later date. Offer condolences at www.BerminghamFH.com
