Mary Buck Obituary

Mary Patricia Kernahan Buck

AGE: 91 • Damariscotta, Maine

Mary Patricia Kernahan Buck, who worked as a social worker before marrying, raised eleven children, and then returned to her career 28 years later, died December 7, 2015 in Damariscotta, Maine. She was 91. Mary Kernahan was born in Brooklyn, New York, on June 10, 1924, the youngest of nine children. Her parents were Martin Kernahan and Elizabeth McNamara Kernahan, who was born in Knocknageeha, County Clare, Ireland. Martin Kernahan was trained as a draftsman and for a period during the 1920s was manager of Thomas Edison's West Orange, New Jersey, manufacturing plant. She graduated from Chestnut Hill College in 1945, and pursued graduate studies at Fordham University in New York. She worked for a time for Catholic Charities in New Jersey. She married Thomas Francis Buck in 1947.

She is survived by each of their children and spouses: Mary Dempsey Lowry of Palmyra, Virginia; Kernahan and Jody Buck of Holliston, Massachusetts; McNamara Buck and Michael Rome of Cambridge, Massachusetts; Rinker Buck of Newcastle, Maine; Bridget Gallagher Buck and Ralph Moore of Rockland, Maine; Bryan Burns Buck and life partner Elizabeth Starr of Wiscasset, Maine; Cronin and David Sleeper of Pomfret, Vermont; Nicholas McMahon Buck of Newcastle, Maine; Andrew Gagan Buck and Glenn Ronquillo of Somerville, Massachusetts; Ferriss and Will Donham of Arlington, Massachusetts; and Adrian Wall Buck of Woolwich, Maine. She is also survived by nineteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Buck's husband had a career in publishing, and authored the 1967 book, But Daddy!, the story of raising a large family with Mrs. Buck in New Vernon, New Jersey. The family was active in New Jersey politics. Mr. and Mrs. Buck attended the inauguration of President Kennedy in 1961, and also attended the 1969 launch of Apollo 11, the first manned expedition to the moon. The family moved to Montrose, Pennsylvania in 1970. Mr. Buck died in 1975. Mrs. Buck then went to work for the Susquehanna County Assistance Office. She retired in 1985. Mrs. Buck resided in Bath, Maine from 1998 through 2013. She moved to Damariscotta in mid-2014. In Bath she volunteered at the Patten Free Library Bookstore for a number of years. She took courses at the Senior College, was enrolled in art classes, exercise classes, and writing groups. An avid reader on a wide variety of subjects, she was active in two book clubs in the Bath-Brunswick area. She frequently attended lectures and concerts at nearby Bowdoin College and participated in many peace walks and vigils. She took joy in walking and going to movies. Among her many friends, remarks such as these abound: "a very beautiful and intelligent lady," "she had strong opinions and expressed them well;" she will always be valued for her "wit, wisdom, her forward thinking and her loyalty." Mrs. Buck was a volunteer at the Bath Area Food Bank. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to local food banks.

A Celebration of Thanksgiving for the Life of Mary Patricia Kernahan Buck will be offered at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 16, 2015, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 11 Glidden Street, Newcastle, Maine. A reception will follow. Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St., Rockland. Dear Rinker, Ned and all of your family,
I have no connection with your family except I lived in Morris Plains at the same time that your family did and when I was married, my husband and I moved to Mt Kemble Ave in Morris Township. I had just finished reading your book about your journey over the Oregon Trail. I was very much taken with what you and Ned were able to accomplish but you never mentioned your mother until the very end. And then in a few days her obituary was in the local paper. It was beautifully written and completed your story. She certainly had a remarkable life as well. My sincere sympathy to all of you. You must miss her very much.
I felt compelled to let you know that I was thinking of your extended families. I feel as though I know you just because of the familiar places we have all shared in the past.

Dear Rinky and Macky and all the other amazing Buck children:

I will always remember your mom with fondness. We lived down the street (Mt. Kemble Avenue) in Harding Township and my father adored both of your parents. He spoke of them until the day he died. What a beautiful family you were and continue to be. Your parents knew how to raise children and now they are together again watching over all of you.

Bask in the remembrances of your folks - they don't come along like that very often.

May you find peace during your time of loss.

With affectionate remembrance,
Anna Marie Giordano
