Michael J. Copensky, Jr.
Rockaway Borough - Michael J. Copensky, Jr. died on Wednesday, August 25, 2021 at Boonton Care Center in Boonton Twp. He was 91. Born in Rockaway Borough, to the late Michael and Julia Copensky, he was a lifelong resident.
After graduating from Rockaway High School, he served in the Army during the Korean War. In his younger years, he played semi-pro football for The Iron Dukes and was a Special for the Rockaway Twp. Police Dept.
Mr. Copensky was known to all as a "true gentleman" and was affectionately known as "Ironman" to his family. He overcame adversity having lived through "The Great Depression", which resulted in his strong work ethic and always powering through life's situations with great vigor and determination. He was a devoted and loyal husband to his wife, Margaret, and a loving father to his four children. His greatest times were spent with his children and grandchildren, watching them play sports.
Mr. Copensky worked as an Electrician with the IBEW Local #102 prior to retiring. He was a parishioner of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Rockaway, and a member of the American Legion Post #344 of Rockaway Twp. He was an avid fan of the NY teams - Yankees, Giants, and Knicks. He enjoyed going to the casinos, the Jersey Shore, fishing and a good meal. He was also a meticulous gardener, as proved by the beautiful rose bushes and hedges outside of his home.
He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret in 2005; his daughter, Darlene in 1968; and his sister Julie Perfetti in 2018. He is survived by his son, Michael Copensky; two daughters: Daria (Robert) Law and Stephanie (David) Minetti; three grandchildren: Mason, Haley and Cameron; and his brother, Edward (Jennie) Copensky.
A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, August 30 at 10:00 AM at Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Church, 65 E. Main St, Rockaway. Interment to follow at Sts. Peter & Paul R.O. Cemetery, Randolph.
