Sr. Theresa Chiappa
Ledgewood - Sr. Theresa Chiappa, a member of the Society of the Sisters of the Church, Diocese of Paterson, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2021 at Morristown Medical Center. She was 83 years old, and a resident of Ledgewood, NJ.
Sr. Theresa spent most of her life in Morristown, NJ and her home parish was St. Margaret of Scotland Church, where she attended grammar school. From there, she joined the St. Vincent Juniorate, in Convent Station.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from the College of St. Elizabeth, Convent Station and studied for a Master's in Education at Jersey City State College in Jersey City. She earned her State Certification in Elementary Education and taught for more than 40 years in many parish schools from inner city to suburban areas throughout the Paterson Diocese, the Archdiocese of Newark and the Archdiocese of Boston. Most recently, she was a volunteer teacher of religion at St. Therese School in Succasunna. She was also an active member of the National Catholic Educational Association.
Sr. Theresa devoted her entire life to religious service and ministry, serving for many years as a Sister of Charity, Convent Station, NJ. She was also a Pastoral Associate at St. Patrick Parish, Cambridge, Massachusetts, and a chaplain at Morristown Medical Center, where she retired from her ministry as a Pediatric Chaplain after nearly 30 years of cumulative service. She was also a member of the National Association of Catholic Chaplains.
She leaves behind a large, loving family including many nieces, nephews and cousins, and many friends, including her dear and devoted companion, Sr. Jo Mascera, S.S.C.; her brother Joseph Chiappa of Mt. Laurel, NJ; and Thomas Chiappa and his wife, Donna of Lake Tahoe, CA. She is predeceased by her sister, Natalie Cunningham-Christal; her sister and brother-in-law Carmela and Brian O'Rourke, and her parents, Natalis and Marjorie Chiappa.
The wake will be held on Monday, August 23 from 3:00-7:00 p.m. at St Therese Roman Catholic Church (151 Main Street, Succasunna). The Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, August 24 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Therese Church followed by a burial at Holy Rood Cemetery in Morristown.
