Patricia Hughes Obituary

Patricia (Pat) Hughes died on December 27, 2011.
Pat was born on March 18, 1933 in Seattle to Ted and Hattie Palin. She moved with her mother and stepdad, Ken Carlson, to Moses Lake in her early teens. She loved to ice skate on the frozen lake in the winter. She graduated from Moses Lake High in 1950. Pat also has roots in Roslyn. Her grandparents (Gallaher family) and their children lived in Roslyn in the late 1800's and early 1900's.
She was happily married to Ernest James Hughes for 40 years until his death in 1995. Enjoying the salt water beaches, they lived in Edmonds, Washington for 34 years, and raised their three children there. She worked as a bookkeeper and as a grocery store checker. Pat retired, then she and Ernie moved to Ellensburg in 1992.
Pat greeted everything in life with enthusiasm and hard work. She loved gardening most of all, she always kept a beautiful yard and a prolific organic garden. She also loved to go fishing with her family (and out-fish everyone on the lake.) Pat enjoyed her friends; playing Pinochle, exercising at the Center, and going on senior excursions.
She is survived by (and missed by) her loving family: brothers and sister: Ted (Ruby) Palin, Doug (Gwen) Palin, Jim (Faye) Palin, and Sue Robinson; children: Ernie Hughes, John (Monica)Hughes, and Pam (Rick)Richards; grandchildren: Dan (Becky) Sherley, Joanna (Brian) Hahne, Bria Hughes, Amy Richards, Sarah Hughes, and Matt Hughes; plus eight wonderful great-grandchildren; and many beloved cousins, nephews and nieces, and friends.
After a courageous battle with lung cancer, Pat passed away peacefully at her home, knowing that Jesus her Savior was waiting for her with open arms.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, January 7th at Ellensburg Foursquare Church (906 E. Mountain View Ave.)

I counted myself very blessed to have met Pat and Ernie (the love of her life) back in 1988 while she was working at Petosas Family Grocer. Pat was always kind to me and made me feel special whether we were talking in person or over the phone. I will miss her very much but I know that she is happy to be back with Ernie again. I love you Pat and thank-you for being my friend.

Pat was one of the sweetest, funniest and spunkiest people I ever met. She was my neighbor since 2004 and ever since the first day I met her I knew i wanted to be like her. I am really going to miss seeing her every day when I go outside. She always knew what was going on in the neighborhood. My mom and I will miss her dearly.

Our friendship with Pat goes back to the days we worked together at Sky Nursery in Seattle. She was a dear friend, and we'll always remember her sweet nature, gentle spirit and her unwavering positive attitude, even as she battled cancer. We enjoyed stopping to visit her when we traveled to and from Spokane, her door was always open!
We shared the love of gardening, and over the years she has shared bits and pieces of her garden with us. We will be reminded of her every year when the campanula from her Edmonds garden blooms, and when we harvest shallots and beans from our garden.
Our heartfelt sympathy and prayers go out to all her family. She will be deeply missed.
