Charles Waggner Obituary

Charles "Chuck" E Waggner, 81, and a 48-year resident of Darien, died at home on Dec 17

He was born in Baltimore, Md to Charles and Lillian Waggner Chuck was a graduate of Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and received a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering from the University of Maryland, where he excelled in track and field and was the captain of the university's cross country team He later obtained a juris doctor degree from Loyola University in Chicago

Mr Waggner enjoyed a distinguished career in the petrochemical industry, first working for Standard Oil in Baltimore and then moving to Illinois to join Cosden Oil Company, eventually, transferring to Cosden's New York offices The majority of his career was spent as a partner and executive vice-president of Darien-based Esselen Associates where he worked until his passing

At 46, Mr Waggner became an avid marathon runner, completing upwards of 70 marathons In addition to competing in New York, Boston, and Houston, he ran internationally, achieving a personal best time of 2:55:36 at the London marathon He also enjoyed cooking and entertaining for friends and family

He is survived by his wife of 33 years Joan: six children, Robert, Sharon, Nancy, Mark, Ellen, and David; his step daughters, Christine and Torrey; and 11 grandchildren

A memorial service will be held on Monday, Dec 23 at the Noroton Presbyterian Church, 2011 Post Road, Darien

Mr Waggner has been a dedicated Blue Wave supporter attending numerous football, lacrosse, and field hockey games, often with his blue and white scarf-clad poodles Because of his love of Darien High School sports, donations can be made in his name to Darien Athletic Foundation Inc, Attn: Memory of Chuck Waggner, 17 Old Kings Highway South, Suite 140, Darien, CT 06820
