Mary Howes Obituary

Howes, Mary Frances Lantry
Mary Frances Lantry Howes, a long time Darien resident, passed away at home on January 30, 2015. Mrs. Howes was born on October 15, 1930 in Cornwall, Ontario, Canada which was the closest hospital to her home town of Helena, NY. She was the daughter of Barnaby G. and Elizabeth Lantry.
Mrs. Howes graduated high school at 15 years of age from St. Josephs Academy in Malone, NY. She then went on to The College of New Rochelle, NY and graduated at the age of 19 with a Bachelor's Degree in social science, received a Master's Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Bridgeport and attended the Fairfield University for Guidance and Counseling certification and was working toward her doctorate.
Mary Frances was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Roger Carrington Howes. They lived in New Rochelle, NY with Roger's parents before moving to Stamford in 1957. In 1966, they moved to Darien, CT.
Mrs. Howes was an Elementary School teacher at Westover, Willard and Belltown Schools and a guidance Counselor at Rippowam High School. She established and coordinated an Executive Internship Program for the Stamford Public Schools which entailed working with students at the three high schools to assist them in finding career related jobs. She also worked with community organizations and corporations as resources for the school and was involved in administering a Board of Education State funded after school work program.
In her earlier years she enjoyed playing golf, tennis and in recent years enjoyed playing bridge with her friends.
Mary Frances and Roger had many dogs throughout their lives, mainly English Mastiffs, Weimaraners and Newfoundlands, that brought them much joy.
She was survived by her two sons, Mark K. Howes and wife Karen L. Howes of Nunda, NY; Scott W. Howes and wife Pamela Maestri-Howes of Easton, CT, NY and two grandchildren, Jeffrey Howes and Kimberly McTarnathan. She is also survived by her sisters, Claire Koszan and husband Alex of New York state and Ann Andreaggi and her late husband Joe of New Jersey.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 29, 2015 at 2:30 PM at Union Memorial Church, 58 Church Street, Stamford. Burial will be private. www.lawrencefuneralhome.com.
