FITZGERALD, Dustin Robert, Lance Corporal, USMC age 22, of Huber Heights, passed away Wednesday. August 18, 2004 in Iraq. Dustin was a graduate of Wayne High School Class of 2000 active in numerous sports, wrestling, baseball, and enjoyed all other sports. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Donna Fitzgerald. Surviving are his parents, Melody J. & Michael J. Fitzgerald of Huber Heights; brothers, Brandon M. of Fairborn, Shannon P. of Huber Heights; maternal grandparents, Judy & Tom McCann of Yellow Springs; paternal grandfather, Frank Fitzgerald of Leoti, KS., maternal great-grandmother, Helen Jones of Kettering; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends. Funeral Service 10:00 AM Friday at St. Peter Catholic Church, 6161 Chambersburg Rd., Father Earl Simone officiating Interment Byron Cemetery. Family will receive friends at the Marker & Heller Funeral Home, Huber Heights Chapel, 5844 Old Troy Pike from 5-8 PM Thursday. Memorial Contributions may be made to AFJ ROTC @ Wayne High School, 5400 Chambersburg Rd. Huber Heights. Ohio 45424 in Dustin's memory.

I remember watching the news when I saw "fallen heroes" segment on tv.. I am sorry for your lost. I am still active Army and deployed OEF twice. Though I was only 14 when it happened.. I feel connected somewhat since he had a passion for cars. Never forgotten. Thank you for everything

Words cannot express the sadness I feel for your loss. I am Dustin's cousin that he barely got to know. I am David Gardner's daughter Tasha. I dont remember that much about Dustin because I was so young. One thing I can say is that I am very thankful for the sacrifice Dustin made for not only my family but millions all over the US. My husband and younger brother are both serving in the military and I cannot imagine losing one of them. It is with great pleasure that I have the honor to say that this brave Marine was my cousin and died fighting for his country. I just read your entry and you touched me. I am a mother and a grandmother, and I can't imagine the pain that you are in. I do know that God can bring you through all things! I thank God because He has "...wiped away all tears from Dustin's eyes..." and that Dustin will "...never know pain or sorrow again..."

I have been in the ministry since 1979 and in 2004 God blessed me with a "personalized" tape ministry for our troops. I consider it an honor to do what I do.

I can't relate to your pain, but I can say that we as mothers are the only ones who can say that we carried our children close to our hearts for nine months and even though the chord was cut the love that binds can never be broken.

I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I am terribly sorry to hear about Dusty. We graduated the same year and we were in Sea Cadets together. At the time, I was the Cadet leader when I met him. He was a Marine long before he entered Marine basic training. He was passionate about wrestling and life in general, and I know that he was one of the most well disciplined cadets in our unit. He always listened very well and took whatever task we had to accomplish very seriously whether it was Kung Fu training, drill or running the obstacle course. He loved the movie, "Full Metal Jacket" and often we would joke around with him telling him that he looked like the main character. He would quietly laugh and make the same face as the character with a sense of pride on his face. I am thankful to have known him and to have served with him. As I have said, he was a Marine long before he ever entered basic training, and he will never be forgotten as a friend, Marine and fellow Sea Cadet.

Dustin, sorry I didn't get this in for you birthday yesterday. Happy Birthday!!! I know you were with Shannon last night at the dance helping him get up there and dance, it was fun. I hope you are able to float and dance on the clouds in heaven. We miss you here on earth each day, but are blessed to know that your spirit is still with us. I am sure your proud of your mamma, she stays strong for you each day, thank you for being with her. Dear Fitzgerald Family,

My name is CPL Fulk with Marine Barracks 8th and I Washington D.C. and i first want to start off by saying im so sorry for your sons loss. I went to S.O.I (School of Infantry) with your son. We met for the first time in soi and from that day on we became really good friends. We hung out on the weekends and tryed to get away from the barracks as much as we could by renting a hotel room out in town as often as we could, due to the simple fact that we hated staying in that place so much. We hung out all the way through soi and then talked a few times after we went our seperate ways but soon after kinda lost touch. I was milling around on the computer last week and was wondering how some of my old soi buddys were doin. I had his number but had no longer worked. I then realized he had probably been deployed so i typed his name into the yahoo search engine and then came across this site.I couldnt beleave what i saw so i then looked it up on the cnn site and sure enugh it was correct. I am sooo sorry to hear this. If youu need anything have any questions please feel free to contact my email if you want to. I think i also have some pictures that i could give you also. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

I was in ROTC at Tecumseh and became friends with "Ox" during his sophomore year. Being a Marine was his dream ever since I knew him, "Once a Marine, always a Marine". My Lovely Sis & Family

Its really hard losing another part of our family. Dustin earned his angel wings while here for a short time. He served his country, gave time to his family,and done alot for himself.I especially loved the way he did the Major Payne movie, he could recite every word of it. You Melody and Mike have raised your children very well. You have provided everything possible for them, and even now Dustin is still getting the best and always will.When Jerry died, I thought the world had come to an end. Then I thought one day that no, this is the beginning of a whole new life. Dustin is at peace now, he did a good job serving his counrty.Sis, you and your family are in my heart forever, and one day we will be together laughing instead of crying about the times Dustin made us laugh.Jerry and Dustin never got to spend much time together, but now they are in heaven with no time limits,no schedules to keep,and most of all they are with us helping us get over lifes hurdles daily.
