Eugene SPATZ Obituary

SPATZ, Eugene F. 87, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2017. Gene was the loving father of 8 children, Catherine (Dave) Johnson, Steve (Sheila) Spatz, David (Faith) Spatz, Donna (Ralph) Knipp, Thomas (Lisa) Spatz, Julie (Al) Emerson, James (Kammy) Spatz, and Carol (Bob) Erisman. Their mother, Ann (Buehler) Spatz preceded him in death. He was also adored by 20 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Gene was born and spent most of his life in Trotwood, Ohio where he served his community as a custom home builder and general contractor. Upon retiring he moved to Jacksboro, TN where he built his lakefront home and enjoyed hosting family reunions, boating, socializing and continued to build and remodel. Due to the progression of his Alzheimer's disease, he spent the last year of his life at Brookdale in Greenville, Ohio where he was well cared for and enjoyed putting a smile on the faces of the other residents. Gene served his country in the US Army during the Korean War. There will be an open invitation graveside service at the Royal Oak Cemetery in Brookville, Ohio on September 15 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made toward Alzheimer's research (www.alz.org/donate) or Brookdale Hospice at 2621 Dryden Rd. Suite 204, Moraine, Ohio 45439. Arrangements are under the direction of Zechar Bailey Funeral Home in Greenville. Condolences for the family may be expressed through www.zecharbailey.com

We always enjoyed interacting with Gene when he came to Greeneville, TN to visit Steve and Sheila and their family. He loved to tease and there was that twinkle in his eye!
When our first son was born he suggested we name him "Little Eugene", which quickly became a favorite nickname.
Our family was greatly benefited by Gene and his home-building and general contractor experience through his son, Steve, who custom built our beautiful home in TN. We enjoyed it thoroughly for 10 years before moving to VA. Having worked on staff with Steve for 22 years, we witnessed firsthand the skilled ingenuity and craftsmanship through many construction and remodel projects, along with his incredible work ethic, all taught and instilled in him by his dad.
In our new home in VA, we now enjoy more of Steve's handiwork, including a gorgeous 8 foot, oak farmhouse table and bench thanks to his amazing woodworking skills and talent and some of the machinery once owned and passed down to him by his father.
Having met his 8 children, many of his grandchildren and great grandchildren, and watching them interact with one another, we know Gene knew he was a blessed man. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
He will be remembered fondly.

Uncle Eugene had charm, a roguish smile, charm, a twinkle in his eye and CHARM. I had never experienced an adult who enjoyed and respected children so much! He made me feel like a princess and I loved being around him. He was a man of talents; woodworking, architecture, and people skills. My sympathy to my cousins for this loss. I was honored to experience my favorite Uncle Eugene.

Uncle Eugene was a special person, always ready with a cheerful smile or joke. I loved listening to him play the accordion--he could really liven up family gatherings. My condolences to all who loved him.

Although I never had the opportunity to meet you in person, I feel that I did meet you through the love and kindness of your daughter, Julie. You have a wonderful and loving family with some I have yet to meet. As you face the Lord, be proud when you hear Him say, "Well done my good and faithful servant. " Your work here on earth is done and a kingdom of greatness awaits you. May you Rest in Peace. You will be greatly missed.

Eugene was a favorite uncle of mine! He always had a cheerful and usually humorous greeting whenever around him, and always took the time to make those around him feel important and welcome. He will be missed by us all. Love to all the family and cousins. -Ed Vendely
