Hugh SUMNER Obituary

News Death Notice

SUMNER, Hugh Hugh was born July 13, 1928 in Twila, Kentucky, the eighth of nine children, to Cora (Johnson) and Mack Sumner. He was a good athlete in high school playing football, basketball, and running track. After graduating high school, he enlilsted with the Navy and served his country with honor during the Korean War. Hugh continued serving people throughout his life by working with his hands, building his church and homes for family and friends. He retired from General Motors where he worked in various positions, as a welder, foreman and a member in the bargaining unit. Hugh was a former trustee and active member of the Miami Shores Baptist Church in Moraine for many years, and most recently attended the First Baptist Church of Kettering. He enjoyed staining glass, woodworking, and practically anything with tools. He was known to bring tools even on vacations and while visiting family and friends because Hugh was always given a list of things that needed to be done. He was an avid University of Tennessee sports fan especially the football program. When he wasn't working or serving others, he enjoyed playing bridge, square dancing and round dancing, and traveling with family and friends. Hugh is preceded in death by his parents, and his siblings, Walter, Evelyn, Claude, Pauline, Jack, Ruth, and Ernest. He is survived by his wife Willie Gene (Harber) Sumner, two sons Hugh Allen Sumner (Indy) and Ernest Warren Sumner (Nancy), three grandchildren Joel Allen, Katie Lynn, and Benjamin Matthew, and sister Edith Tollivar. The family will receive friends Monday November 10th from 5-7 pm at CONNER & KOCH Life Celebration Home, 92 W. Franklin St., Bellbrook(937-848-6651. You are invited to wear UT Vols colors and share some strawberry rhubarb pie, two of Hugh's favorite things. A life celebration will follow at 7:00 pm with Pastor Doug Surber officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Pike, Dayton, Ohio 45420. You may share a story or send a condolence to the family at www.ConnerandKoch.com by clicking on his name.

May the God all comfort strengthen the entire family during this time of sorrow. Those who die God keeps in his memory because they are precious in his eyes. (Psalms 116:15) My sincerest sympathy.
