Maude BROWN Obituary
BROWN, Maude Leanora D. Age 84, made her transition Monday, Mar. 12, at Friends Care Nursing Home in Yellow Springs. She was born Oct. 22, 1933, the daughter of the late Chaplain (COL) John Allen DeVeaux, Sr. and Della Phillips DeVeaux. Leanora was preceeded in death by her husband, Orlando, to whom she was married for over 60 years; and brother, Chaplain (COL) John Allen DeVeaux, Jr. She is survived by her sons Orlando V. Brown II of Yellow Springs, OH; Allen M. Brown of West Carrollton, OH; Martin O. Brown (Christin) of Columbus, OH; devoted "daughter" Denise Lennon of Yellow Springs, OH; brother Bishop William P. DeVeaux (Ret.) of Mableton, GA, sisters-in-law Dr. Patricia (Pam) DeVeaux, of Mableton, GA, GaynelleDeVeaux of Las Vegas, NV and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Leanora was born in Wheeling, W.Va., and raised for a large part of her childhood in Jacksonville, FL. Being the daughter of a career Army officer, this took her to various states during her formative years. She graduated from Junction City High School, Junction City, KS. Leanora was a graduate of Hampton University and Central State University. She and her late husband, Orlando, moved to Yellow Springs in 1955. Shortly after her graduation from Hampton Institute, she was briefly employed as a secretary at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. She was subsequently hired by the Dayton Public School System, from which she retired after a teaching career of more than 30 years. During her career she taught at Garfield, Grace A. Greene, Horace Mann, Weaver, McNary and Webster Elementary Schools. When she retired, Leanora received an award for 25 years of perfect attendance. Leanora was a faithful member of Central Chapel A.M.E. Church for over 60 years. During that time she served on the steward board, senior choir, was a stewardess and was a member of the Lay Organization. She, along with her husband Orlando, also tithed faithfully. In addition to her church affiliation, she was a member of the Friends for Payne and the Delta Sigma Theta organization. She was also an active Scout mother of Boy Scout Troop 78. Leanora was also very philanthropic, contributing regularly to Piney Woods School, a Haitian orphanage, the Yellow Springs Senior Center and countless other organizations. Leanora had a reserved personality, but was a loyal friend to all who took the time to get to know her. Her kindness, generosity, warmth and tremendous heart will truly be missed. Visitation will be held on Friday March 16, 2018 at Central Chaple A.M.E Church 411 S. High Street, Yellow Springs, Ohio, 6:30-8:30pm A memorial service in honor of Leanora will be held at Central Chapel A.M.E. Church Saturday, March 17, 2018 at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the DeVeauxJoseph Scholarship Fund at Central Chapel. Arangements entrusted to Porter-Qualls Robinson Funeral Home.
