Noni was the first person I met on my first day of work at the Wright-Patt Medical Center. She told a joke in her typical fashion. We became friends. One year, she got so mad at me for having the graphics department make a poster with her picture on it and a congratulations on her 70th birthday. She was so mad she refused to come out of her office to attend her party. The room was packed full and spewing out into the hallway with people. She forgave me after a time and we laughed about it later. I loved Noni and I will think of her and remember her grit and her humor. Noni was one of a kind! She loved her work. She loved dear Kurt. She loved her husband Ray. She loved Kurt's little dog Badger. She cared for everyone who came into her life. Noni god speed.

Nonie was the gateway to surgical care for several of my wife's surgeries at Wright-Patterson AFB OH. We developed a friendship during our pre-admission interviews with Nonie, where she put us at ease with her war stories -- some real, many obvious fabrications for effect. It was Nonie's gift to us in making that stressful process entertaining despite its seriousness. We came to deeply appreciate that inside her tough-as-nails exterior was a soft, caring heart. We're saddend to learn of her passing but will remember her with a smile.

On behalf of the Society of Air Force Nurses, please know that we are mourning with you the passing of our friend and colleague, Captain Nora "Nonie" Heinrich. She was a remarkable woman who made a difference in the lives of so many as she journeyed through life. As a long-time member of the Society, a donation will be made in her memory to the Women In Military Service for America (WIMSA) Memorial that stands at the entrance to Arlington National Cemetery. Nonie will be missed, and she will not be forgotten by the community of Air Force nurses.
