News Death Notice
GARRETT, Richard A. of Dayton, was called to rest Sunday, October 8, 2013 at his residence. A native of Dayton and a veteran of the United States Army. He retired from the Dayton Police Department as a Sargent. Preceded in death by his parents, Frank & Charlotte Garrett; cousin, Robert Harris. He leaves to cherish his memories, sons, Richard A. Jr. & Richard Andre' (Saffiyah) Garrett; a devoted daughter, Robin Garrett (Larry) McDonald; brother, Frank (Maggie) Garrett; sisters, Marlene (Milton) Britton, Carol Curtiss, Charlotte (James) Jeter; aunt, Virginia Crenshaw; cousin, Roland Hines, Sr.; mother-in-law, Elizabeth Copes; special granddaughter, Janya McDonald; special friends, Clara Garrett Wood, Martha Liggins; 12 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral service will be held 1 pm Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at the House of Wheat Funeral Home, Inc., 2107 North Gettysburg Avenue. Pastor Andre Hayes officiating. Interment Dayton National Cemetery. Visitation 10 am Tuesday at the funeral home until the time of service. Family will receive friends one hour prior to service. First i would like to send my condolences to the Garrett family. For over 20yrs you guys have been so good to my family n I and has always been there for us through the good n bad times. I would like to take the time out just to say THANK YOU. You n your family are in our prayers. Robin, just last year i too experience what you are going through, but i stand strong now more than ever before n u too will find peace. Robin and Andre,
I'm so sorry to hear of the sudden passing of your dad. I know you don't understand why, but try to rest in knowing that the Lord does not make a mistake. Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Proverbs 3: 5-6. May the Lord place his loving arms around you and comfort you during this bereavement period. I'm praying and I'll be checking on you both.

We both were saddened to hear of the passing of Richard. As distant cousins by marriage and neighbors we individually, as a couple and as a family shared many a meal, bar-b-que and good time together; going places and back and forth as our yards joined together. We would drag children back and forth, meet at the bar-b-que pit we shared at the edge of your yard, the 4th of July fireworks and the list goes on. These are wonderful memories that are engraved in our minds and hearts forever. I just shared with my daughter how you came to my rescue. Our lives eventually took different paths; but when we would see each other we still had plenty of love for each other. I remember chatting with you at the grocery store and informing you of Marvin's heart attack; you came to check on him very soon afterwards. I know you will be sorely missed by your children, grand children and other family and friends. RIP Richard

Mr.Garrett, I will never forget as a child feeling safe because we had you (a police officer) as a close family friend and neighbor. I will never forget the bike rides that we (the whole neighborhood) would take and stop at cornell market to get treats before going home. The block parties too! You are a great man and you will be missed. Andre, Robin, Mrs. Garrett, My condolences go out to you and your family. Be encouraged.
