Sherman Stanley Obituary

STANLEY, Sr., Sherman E. 79 yrs., passed Friday, Sept. 22, 2017 at home. Graduated from Xenia High School - Class of 1957 - outstanding athlete - in football (nicknamed Squirmin' Sherman), basketball, baseball, track and tumbling. Worked after school for McVey's in downtown Xenia. Entered the Navy in 1957 after graduation and was stationed in Germany where he played baseball and basketball for a base team traveling all over Germany. After returning to the states he started working for the NCR Corporation and retired after 36 years as a Guard with their Security Division. He was a member at NCR Country Club for 30 years, on their Board of Directors for 12 years, and taught junior golf there. He was an avid golfer with a hole in one on NCR's South Hole #2 and Community's Dales #8. After retirement he became a starter at the Pipestone Golf Course for 5 years and Community Golf Course as a starter/ranger for 5 years. He also was a volunteer for 14 years with the City of Kettering's Neighborhood Pride Committee. He was a devoted Cleveland Brown's fan. He loved music of any kind, raising and riding his quarter horses, barbecues at home with family/friends, playing corn hole or croquet, and playing Euchre/Sequence with special friends Jo and Denis Schultz, Jim and Dianna Murray, and Pat and Jerry Wissman (traveling buddies). He never met a stranger - had a unique ability to remember everyone's first name and was a kind, gentle, generous soul. There will be a void in all our lives that will never be filled other than with the wonderful memories we were lucky enough to have shared with him. A service will be held at the Calvary Cemetery at noon, on Thursday, Sept. 28 and is open to all. Family and friends will meet prior to the service near the front gates of Calvary. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to Hospice of the Miami Valley, 46 N. Detroit Street, Xenia, who gave so much care, comfort, and love to Sherm and Nancy - a special thanks to Cathy, Brittany, Michelle, Virginia and Sherry. Or "pay it forward" by helping someone else or by just visiting someone and ending your visit like he did - with one of his great hugs and million dollar blue eyed smiles! Sherm was diagnosed with Parkinsons in 2010, Lewy Body Dementia in 2014 and was a valiant fighter till the end. Born - Cannel City, Kentucky - September 25, 1937 to Clarence C. & Lula Pearl (Wells) Stanley. Preceded in death by son Richard Alan Stanley; brothers, Neal & Tebby Stanley, and a baby sister Ellen Ashton Stanley. Survived by his wife of 21 years Nancy, son Sherman E. (Linda) Stanley, Jr., stepsons Jeffrey L. (Vanessa) Brown and Jason L. Brown; grandchildren, Joseph (Shariece) Stanley, Ian, Alec, Elise & Jonah Brown; great-grandchildren, Logan and Jackson Stanley, brother Chris G. (Taylor) Stanley; sisters, Betty (Ronnie) Bowshier, Ellen and Scarlett Stanley, special neighbor, Becky Kesler and her children Mason, Chase, and Morgan who he was loved like a grandfather, and numerous nieces and nephews. He just made you feel welcome every day, and even though he remembered everyone's name, when he said yours it felt special. A wonderful man!

Sherman Stanley was an amazing man. I have no idea how he was able to memorize so many people's names at NCR. When I started at NCR in July 1990, he had my name memorized by the second day I passed by his guard station. He will be sorely missed. I'm in Romania at the moment and won't be able to attend his funeral but he and his family are in my thoughts and prayers.
