BOWMAN, Woodrow W. "Woody" Age 93 of Waynesville, passed away Saturday, July 22, 2006 at his residence. He was born January 6, 1913 in Farmersville, Ohio the son of the late Wellington Ward & Pearl Narcisis Bowman. He was the founder and owner of Woody's Market, Woody's Over the Road Restaurant, Woody's Little Farm, Woody's Drive Thru, the Wash House Car Wash, Der Dutchman Restaurant, and Woody's Farms, Inc. Woody was a member of the Germantown United Methodist Church, active in the 4-H Club in Warren and Montgomery Counties, and a generous supporter of many school and community events and activities. Preceded in death by the mother of his children Addie Louise Bowman, a brother and 2 sisters. Survivors include his wife Jackie of Waynesville, 2 sons Larry J. Bowman and wife Annelle of W. Carrollton, Danny L. Bowman and wife Donna of Waynesville, 2 daughters Beverly A. Wallace and husband Jack D. of Springboro, Nancy L. Hayslip and husband Michael E. of Centerville, 3 step-sons Terry Adkins and wife Kim of Oakwood, Jim Adkins and wife Chris of Germantown, Joe Adkins and wife Monna of Washington Twp., 2 step-daughters Susan Bavaro and husband Joe of Washington Twp., Julie Adkins of W. Carrollton, 10 grandchildren, 15 step-grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, and numerous other family members and friends. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, July 28, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at the Germantown United Methodist Church, 36 S. Cherry St., Germantown, Ohio. Rev. Carla A. Stengel. Burial will follow at Miami Cemetery, Corwin. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the SWART FUNERAL HOME, W. Carrollton. The family requests in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the Germantown United Methodist Church Building Fund or Hospice of Dayton in Woody's memory.

That man was a heavy influence in my life from the age of 13 forward. I knew him well, and spent many hours with my close friend, beverly, and his private office above the market. We drove many miles in his beautiful Chrysler 300 convertible when we were teenagers, and he let us go through the store at will, and take along anything we wanted for snacks and drinks or whatever else we wanted. He was a great guy and a wonderful humanitarian. He was also a gambler and an adventurer and a man who lived after the very fullest. May God rest his soul.

Who couldnt go into Woody's and stand on the giant scale or look at the water with the fish in it. Then while your parents were shopping go upstairs and read the comic books. Best store around.....being a kid when that was around....missing a great man and an innovator in the community..............

When I was notified of the passing of Woody Bowman I felt a sense of great loss for a man who was soadmired and respected in the Dayton community.I started shopping at Woody's as a young man. You always knew that if you forgot something and the other stores were closed you could always get it at Woody's. It is hard to imagine stores being closed these days but being open 24 hours a day back then was a very big deal. Woody was always a innovator and brought great ideas to his store. Later on in life I became the manager of the Standard Register guest house known at "Manor House". I would purchase several thousand dollars of groceries every month so I was in the store quite often. There was never a time that when Woody was there that he wouldn't come over and say hello. Many nights I would come in to the store around midnight or later and he would be stocking produce. He was such a hard worker. I also remember many wonderful days crusing on the Ohio

River in his beautiful yacht. Many years have passed since I moved away from Dayton but everytime I am back in town and pass the store it always brings back so many great memories of all the wonderful people who worked there and the many good times we had, all because of a man named Woody. We all loved you Woody and pray that you rest in peace.

I started working at WOODY'S in 1978. My wife Charlene, her mother Ruth and her daughter Amy also worked there for many years. I remember those great cruises on the Ohio River every year.Woody was a pillar to the community and will be greatly missed.

My prayers are with all the Bowman family.I worked at the Little Farm for four years and when Woody would come in or if he seen you at the store or resturant he would always speak to you and treated you like you were part of the BIG family he had at Woody's.He will be sadly missed by everyone.

Woody Bowman,

He always had time to talk, smile, and say hello to all that walked in his store. He did this to everyone.

You may have been a rich man, may have been a poor man, but to this man you were all the same. He took time to care and that is what made him who he was.

My family enjoyed Woody's Market with all of the unique deli meats, seafood, sausages, bakery, I could go on forever. Woody's also had excellent pizza that you cannot find today. My sister and I both worked at Woody's when Henrietta Hahn, Sue Cole and Sarah from the Deli, Chester in the meat Dept. I enjoyed taking my children to Woody's and truely miss the store. Woody was a professional businessman-my family shopped there for years& I was fortunate enough and grateful to have been a cashier there. Woody gave me the opportunity of working there after graduating from college. He didn't not care about the color of your skin-if you wanted to work-you had a job.He was always fair and friendly. I remember Woody's Market very well. I shopped with my mother from the late 40's through the early 80's with only a short break from 1961 to 1964 when I joined the Marine's and also in 1964 and 1965 when I lived in California for a year. After my mother's death in 1985 I continued to shop there. My niece worked in the deli to earn extra money.

Woody's will always be remembered in our little town of West Carrollton. I still drive by there every day with a smile on my face because I remember eating at the restaurant several times for lunch, going to the bakery some mornings for donuts, buying the freshest vegetables around (because Woody's was the best), working there as a cashier one summer after High School, and buying my wedding cake there. I remember when I was a young boy we always had to make a trip to Woody's to get fresh oysters. We lived north of Dayton and it always seemed like such a long trip to me, but my mother said that nobody had better oysters than Woody's. Woody's was the original late night market and gourmet superstore. My late grandmother would "only" get her ground round from Woody's supermarket. The best meat, seafood, baked goods, etc., in Southwest Ohio. After now living in NYC for 27 years, and experiencing Fairway, Whole Foods, Balducci's, etc., Woody's is still the "First". My condolences to the family and friends. Woody's will always be a Dayton icon.

All of my family worked for Woody when we were in High School, as did many West Carrollton High School students. He certainly had a sense of humor and we all have fond memories of "The Old Days"! We remember his original fruit stand, the ice cream in the 50's, the restaurant (before the one over Rt. 25), the aroma and taste of his baked goods, the meats, the cinnamon balls. I loved to go into Woody"s with mom as a child and go to the black olive barrel and "taste" the olives. I always enjoyed going into the store and looking at the fish counter and be amazed at the different sea foods that he had. It was as though if you couldn't find it at "Woody"s you may not find it at all. It was a pleasant place to shop no matter what time you entered the store.

Woodrow Wilson Bowman was the most iconoclastic figure ever to grace the city limits of West Carrollton,

Ohio. There will never be another man like him, in that city, nor in any other. He was unique and was a brilliant businessman, who lived the American dream. As for me, I've just realized that I've known Woody since I was just 4 years old and walked into his original fresh produce tent, in 1946. He gave me a warm, fuzzy peach and patted me on the head. We went to his stand every week. Years later, I would become best friends with his elder daughter, Beverly, and we put many miles on his gorgeous Chrylser 300,

once she had her drivers license. I also had the great privilege of having his first wife, Louise, for my step-mother. She and my father were married for 9 years. She was a great lady. The City of WC should build a statue of Woody and put it right in front of City Hall,

where it should forever remain. WC

has never had another citizen who did more for its high profile than has Woody Bowman. I have known him for 60 years and am so deeply saddened by his passing, I can't even begin to put it into words. He had so many of the qualities for which we all strive. He was a benefactor and an adventurer and a showman and a businessman and a gambler and a humorist and a humanitarian and a disciplinarian and a true example of what one person can do, if they are truly determined, and if they try hard enough. In my childhood memories, he is larger than life, and shall remain so. He bought me my first taste of pizza. He took me to my first Italian restaurant. I never for a moment thought spaghetti would actually be served in a restaurant. That was a food item which my mother made at home! He sponsored dozens of kids' sports venues and quietly paid medical, dental, and other bills for those who couldn't afford it. He sent thousands of dollars' worth of free groceries to WC families who didn't have grocery money. His list of accomplishments is endless. His life is worthy of a 3- or 4-part mini-series, at the very least, as well as a best-selling novel. He did it all! A world without Woody Bowman will be a world which isn't quite as much fun, not nearly as exciting, and certainly lacking a bit of mystery. Woody surely slid into home plate, as the saying goes, screaming at the top of his lungs, "Wow! What a ride!" May he rest in peace and may his legacy live forever. I shall sorely miss him, knowing that he no longer walks among us. Life has just become a tiny tad more boring. My deepest and sincerest condolences go to Beverly, Nancy, Danny, and Larry, and all of their children, grandchildren, and spouses. How terribly fortunate we all were, to have had him with us for 93 1/2 years! My heart is very sad.

I can't tell you all the memories I had going to Woody's. We went when I was a child and when I had children, we took them to Woody's. Our favorite things were the elevator, big scale to weigh ourselves on, the water wheel and fountains, throwing pennies in the water, looking out the porthole windows and the lemonade in the restaurant.

One of my favorite childhood memories was when we stayed with my aunt in Moraine on weekends from time to time. On Saturday mornings, she would take us to the restaurant over Woody's Market for breakfast. I remember droping coins in the stream that ran through the restaurant and eating the best blueberry pancakes I've ever had. Losing Mr. Bowman is a great loss to the Dayton community, and I hope his family knows how many lives he touched. Even those who never had the pleasure of meeting him in person.

I just recently met Mr. and Mrs. Bowman a little over a year ago. I am a travel agent and was helping them plan a much desired trip to Alaska and Australia. I was always amazed by Mr. Bowmans zest of life. At the age of 93 he was fully prepared to travel across the world. He always said he would see something he hadnt seen before and learn something he didnt know before.What an amazing man at 93. My sympathy to Mrs.Bowman and family. I know he will be missed by all that knew him.

My grandmother (Sarah Knight) worked in the deli at Woody's for 30+ years, until the day it closed. I grew up with that familiar blue and white checked dress and bonnet. It was a one of a kind place. I was sad to see it close. For years I have hoped someone would bring back what once was... It was such a neat place to go, especially as a young child. It was magic.

I am so sad to see Woody has passed on. I loved the store so much. I had my wedding cake from there when I was married in 1979. I grew up with Woody's and then my children grew up with the store. Woody was the only person who would hire my Daugher Nikki when she was wanting to get a job for the first time. She worked in the bakery and was able to learn how to make wonderful cakes and decorate them. My family and I have been close with Woody's family for yrs. Woody was a great man. My first job was a cashier at Woody's Market. The knowledge I learned from that job I am still using today. Woody was very generous with all his employess and his customers. My wife and I had a tradition of going to Woody's every Friday until we moved in 1995 and taking home a batch of fried livers and potato wedges. I was really saddened when Woody's closed and even more saddened to see that Woody has passed on. My condolences to the family.

I have missed Woody's so much, especially at Chirstmas. Our family started going to the resturant after church on Sundays, before it went over the road. The lines were so long all the way down the stairs to the back door. The meat department was the best. My great uncle Charlie was employed by Woody. Our family loved to come to Woodys Market. My husband visited relatives in Dayton as a child and he could remember as a child going to the fruit stand to get the biggest watermelons. When we had children we would go to Woodys for Birthdays and have them pick out a cake. Most of our childrens birthday pictures have pictures of Woodys cakes. When they graduated from high school, and also college we would order cakes from Woodys. We loved eating in the resturant and also shopping for items we could not get in our local store. We live 60 miles north of Dayton but we spent many happy times in Woodys. Recently our son who now lives in West Chester found a bakery run by some of Woodys former employees and brought home birthday cakes for our grandchildren and we talked about all the happy memories of our trips to Woodys.

My Dad and I used to love Woody's fresh rolls and Italian sandwich meats and would sit in the parking lot and make our sandwiches to eat on the way hom. My wife and I sat in Woody's about 20 years ago and we decided it was time to start our family. Never met Woody but what memroies he inspired!

I have very fond memories of Woody's Grocery. I'll always connect my visits there as a child with visits to my Grandmother's home in West Carrollton. My Grandmother and Aunt would take me shopping there and it was just a child's "dream" store. They had a waterfall in the lobby! And I loved watching those women make all those beautiful cakes in the bakery. And my favorite aisle was the "exotic" one. They had (I SWEAR) chocolate covered ANTS, and roatsted grasshoppers and escargots, etc. When NOBODY else in SW Ohio did. Or anywhere else for that matter. What a unique place. What wonderful memories. Plus my Father worked there back in the early days. Woody Bowman, you left a lot of people with good memories!! Woody was an outstanding entrepreneur becaue he seemed to care about giving people things that made life intersting! My prayers for the family.

I worked at Woody's third shift during the period when Jean White was Manager, and then Don White. Woody was a true gentleman and had a sharp memory. Years later when I ran into him at WalMart, he still remembered me. It's sad to know that such an icon of the industry is gone. Fond memories and best wishes to Danny and the rest of the family.

I used to love to go to Woody's with my parents, especially back in the 70's. We would eat upstairs in the restaurant and then do our shopping. You usually saw Woody in the restaurant, sitting at the counter, talking to people ... so friendly. I was sad when they closed because it brings back a lot of happy memories.
