Barbara Farrell Obituary

Barbara J. (McQuade) Farrell

Barbara Farrell, 81, of Wilmington passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday April 26, 2011 surrounded by her loving family. She will be dearly missed by her family, friends and all those who were fortunate enough to have known and loved her.

Barbara was born in New York City to the late Eugene T. and Louise S. McQuade. The family moved to Scarsdale, NY where they lived for many years. Barbara graduated from The Masters School in Dobbs Ferrry, NY. She also attended Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart and the University of Arizona.

She worked for The Union Carbide Company and as rep for the NY Bell Telephone Co. Barbara moved many times around the country, living in PA, MI, IL and DE. While in Delaware, she devoted much of her time volunteering for various charities and the Wilmington Hospital. She spent 24 years volunteering for The Junior Board at the hospital, spending years in the Whirling Top and the Gift shop where she made many friends. She also spent years volunteering for the Delaware Association for the Blind.

One of Barbara's favorite things was the countless trips she took to her favorite state, Vermont, with her life-long friends Barb and Jack Keefe of Connecticut.

Our mom's kindness and sense of humor touched everyone she met. She made friends easily, exuding a genuine warmth and beautiful smile. She was devoted to her children and exemplified unconditional love.

Barbara is survived by 4 children: Kathi (Ed) of Livonia, MI; James, Patty and Michael (Ginny) of Wilmington and her amazing 4 grandchildren: Ryan & Katelyn Dinkgrave, Dylan McDowell and Jill Farrell. She leaves behind a sister, Carol McQuade who resides in Missoula, MT and Carol's children Brian and Linda.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Kathi and family, I am sorry for you loss. Although I never had the pleasure of actually meeting your mom, I felt like I knew her from hearing Barbara talk about her. She was truly an awesome woman and mother and will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Paula Hendricks

Mickey, dear friend, how i would love to have grown old with you- only the miles kept us apart. I can still hear your wonderful laugh.Memories of our wild times in our kitchens, on the golf course and holiday dinners with our children. I send my love to Kathi , Jimmy , Patty and Michael on this sad occasion. Remember the good times, she was a super Mom and friend to all who knew her. May she rest in peace. Amen (Jean Shepard)
