Carl was born in Camden, NJ, in 1923 to David and Anna Glassman. He was a captain in the Army Air Corps during World War II. While piloting a B-17 over Germany, his aircraft was hit, and after allowing the crew to evacuate, he crash landed the plane and was hidden by Resistance fighters for eight months until rescued by Allied forces. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and Purple Heart for his heroism. After the war, he earned his B.A. from Temple University, and his medical degree from S.U.N.Y. Following his residency in general surgery, he practiced medicine in New Castle County, DE for more than 50 years. He shared his love of knowledge and passion for excellence with both medical students and surgical residents.A true Renaissance man, Carl could be found in his workshop, art studio, or driving his tractor.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Wilma Kopeika Glassman, son Neil (and wife Jean), daughters Debbie Schenkel and Judy Holiday (and husband Michael), and five grandchildren, Maggie, Hannah, Benjamin, Sara, and Jake.
A memorial service will be held at 5 pm on Wednesday, September 23, in the J.H. Ammon Medical Education Center at Christiana Hospital, 4755 Ogletown-Stanton Rd., Newark, DE 19718. Shiva will be held at the family home in Delaware on Thursday, September 24, at 7:30 pm, and at the home of Debbie Schenkel in Allentown, PA on Saturday, September 26, at 7:30 pm.
