Mrs. Catherine Josephine Mancini passed away on Wednesday, October 18, 2017, with her daughter Gina at her side. She was born in South Philadelphia on June 21, 1929 to James and Adelena (Ippoliti) Cardone. There, she met the love of her life - Joseph Francis Mancini, they were married on October 30, 1948. When they moved to Delaware, the South Philly family thought it was the boondocks. Joseph found a 37 year career at the General Motors Boxwood plant and they became Delawareans for life.

In addition to her family, Catherine's passions were Women's rights and the Democratic Party. She was a District Chair, a four time New Castle County Committee Vice-Chairwoman, and a three time delegate to the Democratic National Convention. She was a founding member of the Women's Democratic Club of Delaware-Political Action Committee, serving in all of its elected positions. The WDCD-PAC founded a scholarship in her name, for young women pursuing their college education in public service and public policy. She also was a longtime member of the New Castle County Board of Assessment. Following the 1996 presidential election, she proudly cast her Electoral College vote for President Bill Clinton. In 2009, the Delaware Democratic Party bestowed its highest honor upon her, the Alexis I. du Pont Bayard Award.

In addition to her parents, Catherine is predeceased by her husband, Joe and their son, Alan James. She is survived by her children, Joseph Jr. (Rita) and Gina (Richard), and 10 grandchildren: Joseph III, Alana, Mark, Douglas, Melissa, Christina, Rachael, Angela, Stephanie and Alan, as well as 12 great grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the staff at Seasons Hospice and the Brackenville Center for their care of Catherine for the past 9 years, especially Nurse Joan Rappa.

Friends and family may call on Thursday, October 26, from 5:00-7:00PM at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Wilmington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, October 27, at 11:00AM at St. John the Beloved Catholic Church, 907 Milltown Road, Wilmington. Interment will be at All Saints Cemetery.
