Clifford Embley

Clifford G. Embley passed away on February 7, 2013 surrounded by family in Landenberg, PA.

Clifford was born in Trenton, New Jersey on January 13 1933, son of Pauline Bachick Embley and G. Clifford Embley.

As a proud graduate of Purdue University, class of 1955, Cliff achieved a BS degree in Industrial Engineering. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity and served on the Student Union Board. He was drafted into the US Army in June 1956 and served two years active duty and four years reserve.

Upon his discharge from the Army he worked for New Jersey Manufacturers Insurance Company. In 1968, he became the first executive director of the Better Business for Central New Jersey. In 1973, Cliff and his family moved to Wilmington, DE, as he became president of the Better Business of Delaware. In 1978, he joined Bank of Delaware as a trust officer which merged with PNC bank in 1988. He retired as a Certified Financial Planner and Vice President in Private Banking. Following retirement, he affiliated with Raymond James & Associates as a professional partner.

Cliff had a strong commitment to serving the community and fellow man. As a member of the Trenton Jaycees, he served as president and was awarded "Outstanding Young Man" in Hamilton Township, NJ, for his achievements in fund raising to build Hamilton Hospital. He served two terms on the Hamilton Township Board of Education and spearheaded the adult education program. He was a charter member of Hamilton Township Rotary Club in 1968, and the following year, the club president and remained an active Rotarian up to his passing. He served as President of the Wilmington Club in 1993 and elected District Governor in 1996. In 1999, he travelled to Addis Abba, Ethiopia and participated in a World Peace Conference and Polio Immunization Day where 8.3 million children were given the oral serum. In 2001 he joined Russian Rotarians in Irkust, Siberia on a medical initiative to help rid the area populace of pollution disease by furnishing diagnostic equipment.

Since retiring, he was a member of the Rotary Beach Sunrise Rotary Club and had worked with the Robinson Cook Eye Institute in refurbishing and expanding the Sinsky Eye Clinic in Addis Abba, Ethiopia.

For twenty years, he was development chair for St. Paul's School in Wilmington, DE. He was a member of the Dialog and served two terms on the Catholic Board of Education. He was a daily communicate and minister to the sick at both St. Mary of the Assumption and St. Ann in Bethany Beach, DE. He served four years on the Most Blessed Sacrament School in Ocean Pines, MD. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 6768 in Hockessin, DE and was a 4th Degree Knight. After moving to Ocean View, DE in 2005, he became a member of the Men's Club of St. Ann's parish in Bethany Beach and served on the Board of Adjustment for the township.

Above all, Clifford was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed every opportunity to see his grandchildren at sporting events, plays, dance recitals and school activities. Cliff enjoyed traveling the world with his wife as much as holiday gatherings with his family.

Clifford is survived by his loving wife, Joyce (Conover) Embley, of 57 years; his children, Laurie Ann Houck and husband Gerald, sons James Embley and wife Lisa, Thomas Embley and wife Mary Ann; his grandchildren Kristin, Richard, Emily, Melissa, Jamie, Kelly, Mitch, Scott, Sarah, Andrew, and Audrey. He is also survived by his brother Roger Embley and wife, Marcy, brother in-law, George Conover and wife Marie, as well as several nieces and nephews.

A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 7200 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin DE 19707 on Thursday morning February 14 at 11 am. Friends may call at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road on Wednesday afternoon from 4 to 7 pm. There will be no calling hours Thursday morning. Interment will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Ashland.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Tunnell Cancer Center, 18947 John J. Williams Highway, Rehoboth Beach DE 19971 or to Delaware Hospice, 3515 Silverside Rd., Wilmington DE 19810.
