My wife and I had made friends with Dave and Kate when we lived in Wilm De. We had many good times together. One of my fondest memories was hunting for a Christmas tree each year at tree farms in rural Pennsylvania. Dave directed me in 2 1 act plays at the Drama League. They both went on to compete in the state 1 act play festival. We came in 2nd both times. He was such a talented director. His shows at St Marks we´re always a pure delight. What he got out of those kids was amazing. He was a Red Sox fan I a Yankee. Perfect. He was brilliant. I was amazed at the garden he´d produce in his little back yard on West St. I didn´t care much for phoebe that nasty cat!!! Lol
It´s a shame we drifted apart over the years.
Tonight I was in the neighborhood where they had moved shortly after we did. Which is when we lost touch.
I thought I´d just SEE where they might be. I googled his name for the address and saw this. I had no idea. Very sad and stunned to hear of his passing. My belated condolences to his lovely and talented wife Kate and the entire extended Patch family.

Mr Patch was my teacher at St Mark's. I can't say enough about him. He was kind, caring and truly believed in you. He gave you confidence to be the best person you could be no matter what. You wanted to make him proud of you. He was a very good listener. I graduated in 1977. God bless Michelle Torre

Kate and family, We all lost a true gem of a human being in David. My sincere condolences on your loss and ours. I cry today with you on our loss. I met David in 1978 when he was my Drama Teacher as a Freshman at St. Marks. That beautiful hair he had was nice and curly back in those late 70's( I am guessing Perm). I had gone to public elementary school, so I knew just about no one when I entered St. Marks. Mr. Patch's Acting class was helpful in me getting my sea legs and in making me feel comfortable while meeting new friends. I learned to juggle in Mr. Patch's class and have shown many a young person how to do this, including my 3 sons. So this one little act of kindness to show a skill, has had ripple effects. Mr. Patch was always so kind and always had a positive upbeat personality and infectious smile. I truly liken David to the role Richard Dreyfuss played in "Mr. Holland's Opus" movie. Thanks David for sharing your talents, your energy and enthusiasm in everything you did. Thanks for throwing all those stones and creating so many ripples. We are your opus! God bless your soul and I look forward to seeing you again in Paradise.

"He was a good man" - you got that right. "He was the true definition of an educator" - you got that right. What an exceptional person. I am forever grateful for what my child learned in the remarkable theatrical program "Patch" led at St. Marks. My heart goes out with great sympathy to the Patch family and to all the students and colleagues who loved him, too.

I was just scrolling through the obituaries and of course I remember that face. That face that always had a smile on it. Was always happy. Never in a bad mood. Such a great teacher. He was my freshman year theatre teacher. We had so much fun in his class. If it wasn’t for Mr. Patch I wouldnt have had such a great freshman year , he introduced me to so much. My first boyfriend, my friends, a fun class, ugh I’m so heartbroken over this. You will be missed, Mr. Patch. Prayers to your family.

This was the most beautiful and perfect summary, that will forever memorialize Mr Patch. I could feel him and his memory in these words. Rest easy Mr Patch. Know that you made a difference in so many lives and left them and the world better for it.
