Doris Brofsky Obituary

Doris May Weller Brofsky

Doris Brofsky passed away the first day of spring, March 20th, 2012, in Wilmington, Delaware, after a gallant and lengthy struggle with Alzheimer's. She was just shy of her 89th birthday.

Ms Brofsky was born May 5th, 1923, in Philadelphia to Samuel and Nadia Weller. She was the third of three children; Harry and Mildred were her siblings, who preceded her in death many years ago.

Ms Brofsky's artistic talents became apparent early on, and her passion for painting led her to study fine art at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, in the mid 1940's. One of her instructors was the renown artist Andrew Wyeth. Her work was full of passion, skill and sensitivity, favoring portraits and landscapes in a classic style.

It was during this time that she met the love of her life, the dashing Louis Brofsky, who had just returned from serving in the South Pacific during WWII. The two fell deeply in love, and spent the next seven years enjoying a courtship that included travel throughout the US. Their journeys led them to Seattle, Washington, where they were married on June 7th, 1953. They returned to Wilmington to start a life together and settled in Claymont, where their two sons, Kevin and Keith were born in 1955 and 58 respectively.

Ms Brofsky's life changed dramatically when Louis was diagnosed with terminal cancer, just as their second son Keith was born. She was relegated the role of head of the household, caring for her boys and her ill husband, all while earning their family's income.

Just prior to Louis' death in 1971, Ms Brofsky landed a job at St. Edmonds Academy, to found their art program. Teaching the joys of art to 4-8th grade boys, came naturally to her. The classes became a shining light at the school, highlighted by yearly art shows, awards events and many accolades from the community. Ms Brofsky taught that anyone can enjoy expressing themselves through art. There were no "bad artists" in her classes. Her career spanned twenty five years, before her retirement in the late 1997.

It was also during those years at St.Edmonds, that she met and befriended her dear friend and loyal companion, Richard Primm. Their friendship proved a blessing for both of them, for they provided one another love, support and true friendship at a time when they each needed it most. Mr. Primm's loyalty and care of Ms Brofsky during her later years is immeasurable. He was by her side providing her comfort, when she passed away.

Ms Brofsky is survived by her two sons, Kevin and Keith and her cherished granddaughters; Isabel, Amelia and Simone. Services are pending, planned for May 12th, and will be announced. Please contact [email protected] for more information.

Mrs. Brofsky was my art teacher at St. Edmond's in the 80's. She was an inspiration to learn art and express... and her calligraphy classes are still present as I write!
