Estelle Inden Obituary

Estelle Inden

Age 87, passed away July 20, 2013 at the Court at Palm Aire in Pompano Beach, FL. Born in Philadelphia in 1926, she was the daughter of Benjamin and Minnie Goren, Russian immigrants who moved to the U.S. for a better life. Estelle graduated from John Bartram High School in Philadelphia in 1944. During World War II, she worked at the Philadelphia Naval Yard; after the War, she was employed at Bonwitt Teller in Center City Philadelphia.

In 1946, Estelle met the man she called her "one true love", Martin Inden, also of Philadelphia. The two were married in 1947. They moved to Newark, DE in 1950 and soon opened Inden's on Main Street, a children's clothing store that was later revamped to serve the college students, and became well known to generations of University of Delaware students as the place to find Levi's jeans. Inden's Levi's t-shirts were a common sight on the streets of Newark.

She and Marty moved to Florida in 1979, where she worked at Beach True Value Hardware, Walgreen's Pharmacy and Work Force One, continuing to work well into her 80's. She loved swimming and became known in her Florida condominium community as "Esther Wllliams". She and Marty enjoyed 37-years of married life together until his untimely death in 1985.

A fiercely independent and opinionated woman, Estelle enjoyed getting involved in the governance of each of the communities in which she lived. She was vice president of the condominium association of Cypress Bend as well as past chair of the screening committee. At the Court of Palm Aire she was a member of the resident's council and the flood committee.

In addition to her husband, Estelle was predeceased by her parents and by a brother, Morris. She is survived by her three children, Phyllis (Elliot) Schreiber of Bethany Beach, DE and Delray Beach, FL, Herb (Kathy) Inden of Wilmington, DE and Marcia (Craig Smith) Inden of Coconut Creek, FL and Elkton, MD and her brother, Isidore, of Deerfield Beach, FL. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Allyson Schreiber of San Francisco, Adam Schreiber of Hoboken, NJ, Audrey Inden of Pittsburgh, PA, Margaret Inden of Philadelphia, and Sam Inden, a student at the University of Delaware. Her favorite activity with the grandchildren was to "do" their nails. They often posed together for photos with their fresh manicures, even the boys!

Estelle will be missed by her children, grandchildren, family and the many friends whose lives she touched over the years.

Funeral services will be 1:00 pm Thursday, July 25th at Schoenberg Memorial Chapel, 519 Philadelphia Pike, Wilmington, DE. Shiva will be observed 6:00 pm Thursday evening at the home of Herb and Kathy Inden,

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Vitas Innovative Hospice Care of Broward County, FL, 5420 NW 33rd Avenue, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, or a charity of your choice.

Estelle's feistiness, courage, hard work, and love was legendary. I am especially grateful for the gift of Estelle's children, Phyllis, Herb and Marci. I feel blessed to have had the luck to cherish independent friendships with each of you. May your memories give you the strength to comfort you during this sad time.

Dear Herb ~

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your dear Mother. She was such a kind and gentle soul. My Mother and I truly appreciated the kind and charismatic person who caringly helped with clothing both my late sister and me. Always know her love will live in your heart forever.

Warmest regards,

Carin Gannon
