Frank Dilley touched my life as an undergraduate in the 60s-70s. I suspect he touched many. He was a good person and will be missed.

Dear Dilleys, I have really fond memories of Frank from all the way back to Decatur. I clearly remember his remarks at my Dad's funeral. Your family and ours were so aligned for so many years. Really sorry this world has lost Frank. All the best to you all. Love, Betsy (Moore) Shieh

Frank will be greatly missed. He had a quiet dignity that added to his scholarship. A great friend. Our best to Jane and a wish for good health and happiness.

Dear Jane and children,
I am saddened to read of Frank's passing but absolutely loved his obituary. It was always a pleasure to see Frank and you come into our office and it was definitely a pleasure booking your travel all over the world. Both Charlie and I were thrilled to have you as clients. I enjoyed hearing updates on the children's activities (dance and theatre).
Please know that Frank will forever have a soft spot in my heart. And I loved his beard!
My prayers are with you all.

What a beautiful obituary! It made me want to read his books and articles. I love philosophy and wish I would have known Frank! It is obvious he was a super achiever. I send my condolences to his wife and family, how blessed to have him in your lives! All best wishes to all of you.

I read of this loss of a good person with great sadness. And the line "Frank was a passionate supporter of the performing arts..." was so true. And he was always an interesting visit when encountered at a concert, with wonderful observations. Oh, and I met him managing against him in a summer recreational softball league at the Univ', and he had long since forgiven me for my team occasionally beating his. He was a wonderful presence. My prayers are with the family.

It seems like Frank Dilley was always a part of our lives. Frank and my mother had attended Sunday School together as children in my grandfather's church in Ohio. A few decades later my father and Frank were teaching at the same college in Illinois. Frank's and Jane's children became friends with my siblings and me.
We said goodbye to them when my father left Milliken University and took a job in Buffalo, NY, and 5 years later we landed in Wilmington, Delaware only to find Frank and Jane Dilley were here in Newark! Our families my grandfather having followed us continued to visit periodically, and I can't remember ever going to the Grand Opera House for a performance without encountering Frank and Jane in the audience.
Fast forward another decade or two and I was called in to meet with Frank in his U of D office because I'd signed on to teach a course in his department (as an adjunct), an evening class cross-listed with Women's Studies. Our meeting wasn't exactly an interview, but the venue and purpose suggested I was being assessed, yet somehow he didn't make it feel that way. In my observation, Frank addressed everyone with the respect afforded to an equal. When I was a child, that had impressed me about both him and Jane. Because of it I always wanted an interaction with them before leaving with the children.
Frank's courageous and moving testimony at my father's memorial service, many years later, is something I will never forget. I last saw Jane at my mother's memorial service. This feels like the end of an era.
I can imagine the deep well of grief his family must feel at his loss. I hope you remember the well is full of memories, and you will drink from it for years to come and be sustained by them. I loved Frank's own life summation quoted above, wherein he zeroed in on all that mattered to him the most, and shrugged off all that didn't. May we all have time to assess that and know the difference.
