George P. Barone, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 10, 2016, with his family and loving friends by his side, after a wonderful and full life of 93 years.

Born in 1922 to loving parents, Anthony and Lena Barone, George resided as a young man with his family on Madison Street in Wilmington, DE and was a graduate of Wilmington High School.

After graduation from high school, he entered the United States Army and served proudly during World War II. Upon leaving the service, he was employed by the Railroad as the Head Machinist in the Wilmington shop; he retired in 1983 after 40 years of service. The beautifully restored GG1 electric engine #4935 on which he and his team worked is on display at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg, PA.

George was an active parishioner of St. Helena's Church in Wilmington for many years as a Coach, Athletic Council member, Church Council member and loyal member of the Young at Heart Adult Social Club.

Mr. Barone's many joys in life included traveling the country by train with his family, singing out of tune, playing cards, swimming at the Brandywine YMCA and the games of baseball and softball. Recently nominated for the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame, Mr. Barone served proudly as the softball chief umpire of Delaware for many years and found much joy in the art of the game.

George was predeceased by his loving wife and dance partner, Betty F. Barone; his daughter, Victoria K. Barone; his brothers, Michael, Vincent, Anthony, Joseph, Charles, and Eugene Barone; and his sisters, Mary Strab and Catherine Wilson.

He is survived by his sister, Lucy Denning of Kensington, MD; daughter, Ruth A. Caruso of Salisbury, MD; daughter, Mary L. Dudley and son-in-law, Lee D. Dudley of Owings, MD. In addition, George is grandfather to Nicholas Caruso and his wife, Christine; Greg Caruso and his wife, Audrey; Todd Whitmore and his wife, Lora; Jennifer Chisolm; and Samantha Jordan and her husband, Andrew. He also took much pride in his 10 great-grandchildren: Jessica Riviera Stucky, Benjamin Chisolm, Nathan Chisolm, Chelsee Whitmore, Mark Whitmore, Jennifer Tognarini, Gabrielle Caruso, Nathan Caruso, Gavin Caruso, and Thomas Jordan; and great-great-grandson, Carter Stucky. He also leaves behind a vibrant group of deeply supportive and loving extended family and friends.

The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of St. Francis Hospital and New Castle County Delaware Hospice for their skilled and compassionate care.

A viewing will be held on Monday, August 15, 2016 at 8:30am at Brandywine Valley Funeral Care in the Beeson Chapel, 412 Philadelphia Pike, Wilmington, DE 19809. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10AM at St. Helena's Catholic Church: 602 Philadelphia Pike, Bellefonte, DE. Friends and family are also invited to the burial service at 2PM at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Rd., Bear, DE.
