Age 86, of Wilmington, DE, passed away after a short illness on the morning of September 20, 2008.

He attended Christ Our King School, Salesianum School, Villanova University, and Jefferson Medical College. He practiced pediatrics in Wilmington from 1949 until 1951, when he joined the U.S. Army Medical Corps serving as Chief of Pediatrics at Ft. McPherson in Atlanta, Georgia. He returned to his private practice in 1953 and served as Chief of Pediatrics at the St. Francis Hospital. He began a residency in surgery at the Pennsylvania Hospital in 1957, graduated in 1961, and opened an office in Wilmington. In addition to his private practice, he was Chief of Surgery at the St. Francis Hospital, and Associate Chief of Surgery at the Wilmington Medical Center. He was a founding member of Doctors For Emergency Services (DFES) and Professional Associates (PA). His work was his passion. He devoted many long hours to provide loving and compassionate care for his patients. He was a member of the AMA, the Medical Society of Delaware, the New Castle County Medical Society, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American College of Surgeons and was past-president of the Delaware chapter of the Catholic Physicians Guild. He retired in 1987. George was a loving husband and father of eight. He loved tending his vegetable garden and spending time with his 17 grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Peg Eriksen; his children, George N. Eriksen III (Lief) and wife Marguerite of Shepherdstown, WV, Peter Eriksen of Wilmington, Chris Eriksen and Mary Catherine Murphy of Fort Collins, CO, Gus Eriksen of Wilmington, DE, Liz Eriksen and husband Dan Martelli of Wilmington, DE, Knute Eriksen and wife Laurie of Hockessin, DE, Margaret Toy and husband Steve Toy of Wilmington, DE and son-in-law, Rick Hinkson of Big Island, VA. He was predeceased by his sister, Shirley Pavilonisp; his daughter, Mary Ann Eriksen-Hinkson and an infant son.

Our family wishes to express our sincerest thanks to the caring staff of Forwood Manor for their kindness and compassion during Dad's illness.

A Memorial Mass will be offered at 10:30 am, on Friday, September 26, at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Catholic Church, 10 Old Church Road, Greenville. Friends may call on the family from 9:30-10:30 am, on Friday at the church. Burial will be in the adjacent church cemetery following the Mass.
