Guy WHARTON Obituary

Colonel Guy L. Wharton, Sr. Died Sunday, October 19, 2003 at home. He was the son of the late Captain and Mrs. Ferris Bringhurst Wharton of Newark and Bethany Beach, DE. He was born in Ocean View, attended school in Lewes, was a graduate of Newark High School, the University of Delaware and the United States Marine Corps Officers Candidate School, Quantico, VA and attended former Beacom College. He played varsity sports in high school and college. While attending college he was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. Upon graduating from college, he entered the USMC in 1941. He was sent overseas in January 1942 and served in the Pacific area the entire war having participated in acquiring several of the now famous islands. He also had duty in TX, CA, NC, VA and PA. He spent 24 1/2 years in the Marine Corps. He was a marketing representative for a former distribution serving DE. Col. Wharton was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and the Rehoboth Beach Country Club. He was predeceased by his parents; his daughter, Sue Ann Wharton Miller; his brother, First Lt. Ferris L. Wharton, USMC, killed in Guam; and his sister, Mildred W. Phillips. He is survived by his wife, Mildred S. Wharton; sons, Ferris W. Wharton and Guy L. Wharton, Jr.; granddaughters, Kathleen A. Miller and Abigail F. Wharton; grandsons, Michael G. Miller, Robert C. Miller, Robert S. Wharton, Kyle W. Wharton and Kevin C. Wharton. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the services at Aldersgate United Methodist Church on Thursday, October 23, 2003, at 11 am. Visitation will be held from 10-11 am, with interment in Lower Brandywine Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Beebe Medical Center Foundation, 424 Savannah Road, Lewes, DE 19958; or Delaware Hospice, Southern Division, 600 N.
