J. Thomas Green, Jr. "Tom"

Born in Wilmington, DE in 1937, Tom was the son of the late John T. and Matilda C. (Hassler) Green. After graduating in 1956 from Wilmington High School, Tom joined the military proudly serving his country in the Coast Guard Reserves. His time at sea provided cherished memories, most notably crossing the Arctic Circle in 1958. Perhaps an equally proud moment was when his grandson, Specialist John T. Green IV, presented him with an American Flag which was flown in the Defense of Freedom over the Coalition compound, Kandahar Province, Afghanistan honoring Tom's service to our fine country.

Tom worked for DuPont before he began his apprenticeship with RJ Peoples Painting Contractor. From there he worked for the Wilmington School Board and then began his own business as a paper hanger and painting contractor. Tom built a successful business and was a sought-after contractor known for his attention to detail and integrity. He retired in 2006.

Tom was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish and a 3rd Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus, St. Michael Chapter. He was a former member of the Prince of Piedmont Lodge and an avid swimmer. Tom was happiest when near the water. From lifeguarding the beach of Cape May Point, NJ and fishing on the Sassafras River to swimming in the family pool and summers on the Delaware beaches, he created lasting memories with and for his family.

He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 54 years, Sandra M. (Delloso) Green; his three children and their spouses, John Thomas III and Alisa, Sandra and Pete Williamson, Cindy and Jeff Weir; seven grandchildren, Peter, John, Tyler, Alyssa, Robert, Coleson, and Rebecca; and a great-granddaughter, Sophia Marie. Tom is also survived by his sisters, Patricia McClafferty and Alice Myers; his brothers, George, Lawrence, Leonard, and David Green; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was predeceased by his sisters, Mary Ann Uffelman and Matilda Gallagher.

The family wishes to acknowledge the support of friends and family who filled Tom's final days with love. Special appreciation is extended to the doctors and staff of Helen F. Graham Cancer Center and VITAS Hospice Care.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 30 at 11:00 am at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 345 Bear-Christiana Road, Bear where friends are invited to visitation after 9:00 am. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Helen F. Graham Cancer Center - Special Needs Fund, 4701 Ogletown Stanton Road, Newark, DE 19713 or VITAS Hospice Care, 100 Commerce Drive, Suite 302, Newark, DE 19713.
