James Belcher Obituary

James Donald Belcher

James Donald Belcher, age 88, died peacefully on January 25, 2021 from complications of COVID, at Kutz Rehabilitation & Nursing. He is survived by his wife Leigh Belcher of Newark DE and nephew Mike Early and family (Tyler, Alexandria, Casey, Cheyanna, Callee) of Richmond VA. Jim/Don (family name) was born in Welch, WV to Jimper and Mae Belcher. Jim moved to Pikeville, KY and Buckingham County, VA before entering the US Air Force. Jim worked 20 years for the Air Force as an electrical technician, and was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was an alumnus of the performance flying team, the Thunderbirds, based at Nellis AFB Las Vegas, NV, where he also was employed in various casino jobs. He held tremendous pride in serving his country. Jim worked 10 years for General Electric after retiring from the Air Force. Jim met his wife in Richmond, to begin a 38-year marriage, friendship, and loving bond. Jim's love of the outdoors was shared with Leigh as her kayaking, sailing, and traveling companion. He derived great joy as Captain of their sailing adventures. Jim enjoyed reading science fiction and collected over 2000 books. He was an avid student of military history and a passionate advocate for the Second Amendment. Jim had an insatiable appetite for building and fixing things, often resulting in unique, creative, and elaborate solutions. His subtle sense of devilish humor blended well with his imposing stature, and he was often seen as a gentle giant. Jim's ashes are interred at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear DE. A celebration of life is scheduled for May 16, 2021 from 1:00-4:00 at 4 Knights Crossing Road, Newark, DE 19713.

This was a beautiful tribute to Jim. What an amazing life and he was so humble about all his accomplishments. We are so happy we got to know Jim and you. He was truly a joy to be around and lit up the room with his smile. Our deepest sympathy.

Leigh,
I am so sorry for your loss. I feel so lucky that I got to know both of you. Whenever I think of Jim I see that ornery smile of his.
Thinking of you,
