James H. Gilliam, Jr., Esq. James H. Gilliam, Jr., age 58, passed away suddenly on August 20, 2003 at his residence. Husband of Dr. Linda J. Gilliam. Father of Alexis R. Gilliam, Leslie B. Gilliam and Morgan G. Franklin. Son of Louise H. and James H. Gilliam, Sr. Brother of Dr. Patrice Gilliam-Johnson. Also survived by 1 nephew, Micah A. Johnson; 2 aunts, Mercedes Wilson of Baltimore, MD and Clara Hayley of Atlanta, GA; and a host of cousins and other relatives. James H. Gilliam, Jr. was an attorney and private investor. Until June of 1998, he was Executive Vice-President and General Counsel of Beneficial Corporation, a member of the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors of the company. He was also Chairman of its commercial banking subsidiary, Beneficial National Bank. Mr. Gilliam joined Beneficial in 1979 after service as Secretary of Housing and Economic Development in the cabinet of Governor Pierre S. duPont. Prior to that, he was in private practice with the law firms of Richards, Layton & Finger, P.A. in Wilmington, DE and Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison in New York City, NY. Mr. Gilliam was a member of the Board of Directors of Household International, Inc., a member of the Board of Directors of T. Rowe Price Group, Inc., a Trustee of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, a Trustee of the National Geographic Society, a Trustee of the Hodson Trust, and a Trustee of the CTW Foundation. He was also chairman of The Gilliam Foundation. Mr. Gilliam had also been active with a number of organizations, some of which include Founding Chairman of Wilmington 2000, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Goldey Beacom College, Chairman of the Board of Visitors of Delaware State University, Chairman of the Judicial Nominating Commission for the State of Delaware, and Secretary of the Board of Bar Examiners for the State of Delaware. Mr. Gilliam was the recipient of numerous awards and honors. They included the Wilmington Branch NAACP Presidential Award for Advocacy in the Education and Civil Rights Arena for over 25 years, the Delaware State University Millennium Award, the 2002 Christi Award for Outstanding Philanthropy to the Arts and 2 honorary degrees: Doctor of Laws from Morgan State University, and Doctor of Laws from Delaware State University. There will be a funeral service at 12 noon on Tuesday, August 26 at the Bob Carpenter Center, Rt.896 & Chestnut Hill Rd., Newark, DE, with a viewing from 9-11:30 am only. Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity rituals will be at 10:45 am. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Gilliam's memory may be made to the Morgan State University Foundation, Gilliam Endowment Fund, Truth Hall, Room 201, 1700 E.
