Joan Adele Deutsch
Newark - Our beloved Joan Adele Deutsch, affectionately known as Miss Daisy, passed away peacefully at home on May 8, 2021 with her daughters at her side. A spunky 90 year old, Joan was a force to be reckoned with, and she left us with all of the life lessons and love she could share. Joan was an avid reader, adored her cat Paw Paw, enjoyed shopping at Marshalls and TJ Maxx, and was always up for a good game of bridge or scrabble. She loved traveling abroad, gardening, admiring her collection of antiques and painted glass, and of course, vodka. She loved to entertain, especially when she could break out the china and sterling silver. Her meals were always decadent and delicious, and there was no recipe she wouldn't attempt to tackle. But most of all, she loved her family and friends.
Joan was born in New Rochelle, NY and graduated from LaSalle Junior College and Syracuse University. Joan loved fashion, and began her career writing for Woman's Wear Daily and eventually getting her own byline at Woman's Home Companion (which, in her words, was "a big deal back then"). Once married, she moved to White Plains, NY and focused on raising her family. She was active in PTA, Girl Scouts, and other community groups. She owned retail stores in NY and VA, and also earned her real estate license. Without doubt though, the thing she did best was encouraging her family to enjoy life, work hard, and always make friends wherever you go.
Joan's favorite hometown was Williamsburg, VA, where she moved to open a retail business. She belonged to the Williamsburg Woman's Club, the first Chapter of Antique Ladies, and various bridge clubs. In Delaware, she was a member of the Newark Senior Center and a well-known resident at Regency Square Apartments.
Joan was predeceased by her parents, Marguerite and Elias Baum, and Laurence Deutsch, her husband of 51 years. She is survived by her daughters Susan (Nick) DeNardo and Elizabeth (Keith) Cooley, as well as her grandchildren Cynthia Martine, James DeNardo, Douglas McKee and Matthew McKee, and one great grandson, Chase Martine.
A service to celebrate Joan's life will be held on June 12. In lieu of flowers, please consider supporting Delaware Hospice (16 Polly Drummond Center, Newark, DE 19711), an amazing agency that helped Joan and her family tremendously as they went through this difficult journey, or Faithful Friends (12 Germay Drive, Wilmington, DE 19804), who helped her find her forever buddy, Paw Paw.
