John Lednum Obituary

Age 64, of Bear, DE, passed away September 4, 2012, at Christiana Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

With all his spirit, he fought valiantly against the difficulties he encountered with leukemia, always maintaining a sense of humor and optimism.

John was born in New Castle, DE to the late Harry J. and Marion Heller Lednum. Upon graduation from high school, he volunteered to join the United States Army and served his country in combat in Vietnam. It was during this period that he was presented with the Army Commendation Medal and Bronze Star. Between 1970 and 1993 John continued his duty as a good citizen and proudly served as a Police Officer on the Wilmington Police Department, retiring from the rank of Captain. For his second career, John transitioned to corporate security retiring from the position as the Mid-Atlantic regional manager with AIG in 2010.

During healthy times John enjoyed any activity that would keep him outside. Hunting, fishing, riding a bike or a horse, swimming, tending to his yard and eventually just playing baseball with his grandsons were just a few of his pastimes. Anyone who new John recognized his passion and knowledge of the historical and current Phillies and Eagles team members.

John is survived by his wife and best friend for 41 years, MaryTheresa Lebidziewicz Lednum; daughter, Lindsay Lednum Keller and her spouse, Steven Keller; son, John Daniel Lednum and his wife, Lisa Marie Lednum; grandchildren, John Anthony and Chase Daniel Lednum; brother, Harry J. Lednum Jr. He will be missed by his extended family of Diane and David Wiley, Rose Marie Trotto, and Mary and Stanley Lebidziewicz.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 8 at 10:30 am at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Rd., Pike Creek where friends may visit with the family from 9-10:30 am Burial will be in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. Dupont Hwy., New Castle, DE 19720.

I was honored to be a friend of John as well as a brother officer in the Wilmington Police Department. We joined together and attended the first Police Academy at Brandywine College back in 1970. Over the years, John and his wife Mary Theresa became close friends with Pat and me as police families often do.

I recognized in John something that I wanted to aspire to but never really achieved. He was a "Role Model" to all that knew him. Another aspect of John's character was that he was one of "My Heroes" for his military service. I am a better person for having had him in my life.

John made the world a better place during his time here and it is certain that God in Heaven has welcomed him.

Once, when I had long hair, I saw John at a party for his grandson, and the first thing he said to me was to cut it. Then he just looked at me. Even though it had been growing for 2 years, and without anymore discussion, I knew he was right. As that moment was burning into my memory, I felt like he was my own dad telling me it was time to put away childish things and start acting like a grown-up. Not in a scolding way, but in one of those "just trust me" kind of ways. Of course he was right, and I cut it all off. That is one of my lasting memories of John.
