Joseph Cannon Obituary

Joseph Vincent Cannon

AGE: 94 • Wilmington

Joseph Vincent Cannon, age 94, passed away on Oct. 5, 2017, in Wilmington, DE, after a short illness.

He leaves his wife of 72 years, Beverly Quinn Cannon; his daughters Donna Julian (Eugene) of Wilmington; Linda Graham (James) of Malvern, PA; Mary Ellen Cannon of Wilmington; and son Robert J. Cannon and his partner Cecelia Everet of Chatham, NJ; and seven grandchildren (Elizabeth Julian Weinig, Emily Julian Coccaro, Jennifer Julian Hopkins, Randall Graham, Abigail Graham, Patrick Graham, Halle Cannon) and 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Sally Cannon Dorn of Schenectady, NY, and Sister Sara Ann Cannon of Latham, NY.

Joe was born in 1923 and raised in Troy, NY, and attended LaSalle Institute. His love of golf began as a caddie and he won the Troy Caddie Golf Championship several times as a teenager. After graduating from LaSalle, he served in the 15th Air Force, 5th Bomb Wing, 97th Bomb Group during World War II, flying 50 missions as a bombardier on B-17s out of Foggia, Italy.

After the war, he pursued golf as his livelihood. He was a member of the PGA of America, starting as an assistant at the Mohawk Golf Club in Schenectady, NY, and the Hotel Ormond in Ormond Beach, FL. Later he was director of golf at the Farmington Country Club in Charlottesville, VA (1951-65); the Wilmington Country Club in Wilmington, DE (1965-1976); and the Lost Tree Club in North Palm Beach, FL (1976-1986). He won the Virginia State Open in 1959. He was runner-up in the Delaware State Open five times.

As a member of the PGA of America, he served on the finance committee and helped found the PGA of America credit union. In each of these positions, Joe mentored young golf professionals. He was considered a top teaching professional and introduced hundreds of people to the game.

Golf took Beverly and Joe all over the world, especially after Joe retired and became the golf professional on People to People trips to New Zealand and Australia, Scandinavia and Russia, and Spain, France and Italy. Joe played golf his entire life, into his 90s, and he rarely shot above his age. He was a member of the Bidermann Golf Club and a former member of the Wilmington Country Club.

Joe was a devout Catholic who regularly attended daily Mass at St. Joseph on the Brandywine. He wanted everyone to pray for peace in the world for a few minutes every day.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph on the Brandywine. Visitors may call at Chandler Funeral Home, 7230 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, DE, on Monday, Oct. 9, 2017 between 6 and 8 p.m. Burial will follow Mass in St. Joseph on the Brandywine Cemetery.

Donations in his memory can be made to Amigos de Jesus, 126 Woodland Avenue, Malvern, PA 19355 or to St. Joseph on the Brandywine, 10 Old Church Road, Wilmington, DE 19807.

Joe Cannon was a true son, brother, soldier, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was also a friend and part of our family since we were born. He was respected far and wide, and I'm so blessed that he was part of our lives. His voice was soft, his knowledge vast, his wisdom solid. We all loved him, and I shall miss him. I wasn't close in proximity, but in my heart, he was ever present. Whenever I would call Bev and Joe, he would get on the phone last. I would say goodnight, and I love you. Joe would always answer Love you too dear. And I knew he meant those words. I am so sad for the loss your family is going through. There is no loss. Like that of a parent...they are the only people who have loved us, all of our lives, from the very beginning. And the great loss for his lifetime love and partner, Bev. We grieve with you, and love you like the family you are, and always have been.
Love Trish (Meharg) Edelman
