Kenelm Coons Obituary

Kenelm W. Coons

Annapolis, MD

Kenelm W. Coons of Annapolis, MD, passed away on February 3, 2017, after a three-month illness. Ken will be deeply missed for his kindness, compassion, and humor. He was a great listener and gifted story teller with an inquisitive spirit, keen mind and quick wit.

Ken maintained an active interest in domestic and international affairs and the food world. He was an accomplished sailor and cook who introduced all of his grandchildren to his passion for sailing and seafood. A native Bostonian who also lived for decades in the MidAtlantic, his love of the sea, of reading and of travel made him a delightful companion and friend. He leaves behind a loving family and a wide circle of friends and admirers whose lives he had touched.

After graduating from Harvard College (A.B.'53), Ken served two years of active duty in Germany as an Army Signal Corps Sergeant. He then began his professional career in New York City in marketing, including at General Foods, where he led the successful introduction of Cool Whip.

Ken continued his career in the mid-Atlantic with companies including Iron Mountain and Doxsee Foods, and in 1970 moved to Hockessin, DE with his wife Sally and their three boys, where he was an active member of Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church and the community.

Ken took a new direction in mid-life, earning his Master's in Marine Affairs at URI in 1978. After two years as Executive Director of the Rhode Island Seafood Council, he became Executive Director of the New England Fisheries Development Association (NEFDA) in Boston, a position he held for two decades.

During Ken's tenure, NEFDA co-founded the Boston Seafood Show, managed innovative projects promoting under-utilized species and enhancing seafood quality, and was appointed by the Secretary of Commerce as the first chairman of the National Fish and Seafood Promotion Council.

Ken was a frequent spokesman for the seafood industry in the media and before policy makers. During the final decade of his career, he served as Associate Editor of SeafoodNews.com, and as a member of the National Press Club.

Ken was born July 5, 1931, in Cambridge, MA, the son of the late Quentin L. and Persis (Wallace) Coons. In addition to his wife Deborah, Ken leaves three sons, Thomas W. Coons (Jeanne) of Newark, DE, Sen. Christopher A. Coons (Annie) of Wilmington, DE, and Stephen K. Coons of Annapolis, MD; daughter, Lisa Griffith-Fintl (Helmuth) of Oestrich-Winkel, Germany; two stepdaughters, Blair B. Slaughter (David) of Cockeysville, MD, and Barrie B. Jansen (Thomas) of Moncton, N.B., Canada; brother, William W. Coons, of Newburyport, MA, and nephew, Jeffrey (Mary) Coons, of Smyrna, GA, and nine very special grandchildren.

A family memorial will be private. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Ken's memory may contribute to the Kenelm W. Coons Marine Affairs Scholarship at URI. I was shocked to hear of Ken's passing. Although we had been in touch from time to time over the years, we had recently reconnected. Ken, I and several others served on the National Fish and Seafood Council together, 1986-1981. It was a very intense program and Ken served as our Chairman for a good part of our tenure. My husband also took his "Fish School" at the NEDC. He was such an inspiration and always kept us on an "even keel." I was always thrilled to hear from him. I will miss him and all that he meant to us. Sincere condolences to the family.

I just heard about Ken's death today and I am so, so sorry. I did work for Ken and the New England Fisheries Development Association for a few years and counted Ken as a close friend forever after. He was funny, smart, generous and kinda pleasure to be around, always. He took such great pleasure in telling stories about his family and expressing his pride in their accomplishments. For all his own accomplishments, he was never self-aggrandizing. Since he moved to Maryland, I saw him much less frequently, to my sorrow, often only at the seafood show in Boston. In the past few years, I stopped going to the show and about the only thing I missed were my annual talks with Ken, when I could get through the herd of his other adoring fans. I will always treasure especially the dinners a bunch of us shared for several years the night before the show, when we would gather at a Boston restaurant to eat, talk and laugh. His passing leaves a hole in the fabric of the universe that will not be filled. RIP, dear friend. We will not see your like again.

I had the privilege of working for Ken at the New England Fisheries Development Foundation and felt so blessed to have been mentored and guided by someone with extensive knowledge matched by his passion for the industry, compassion and great humanity. Though I did not meet all of Ken's loved ones in person, I felt like I had the chance learn about them through Ken's having shared many loving stories about each of his family. I loved listening to the joy in his voice and watching his smile as he described how much he admired and cherished all of you.
Ken's warmth and kindness will endure in the many lives he positively influenced. He will be so greatly missed. I extend my profound and heartfelt condolences to Deb, Ken's sons, daughter and extended family.

I was one of the privileged individuals to benefit from Ken's knowledge and wisdom when starting out as a young fish monger in the mid 80's. As the years wore on, I'd see Ken at the Boston Seafood Show where he would always remember my sons and ask about my wife Stephanie whom also benefited from Ken's gifts.
Rest in peace Ken. My condolences to the family.

I first met Ken in 1978 while working for Cong. Gerry Studds. Ken taught me so much about the seafood industry, he and John were quire a pair. Innovators at heart, brought so many good ideas to industry.
Through the years our friendship grew and I always admired his humor and kindness. Ken was a very special person and I am thankful that our lives crossed paths. He will be in our prayers as will his family. May the lord bless his soul.

We worked hand and hand with Ken and others in the heyday of generic seafood promotion and marketing. What a grand fellow, articulate spokesperson for this nation's seafood industry. And we had some sumptuous seafood meals in Boston and Washington DC together! What stories he could tell! Pete Granger
