Martin V. Hart, M.D.

Wilmington - With great sadness we announce the death of Martin V. Hart, M.D. of Wilmington, Delaware. Predeceased by his beloved wife, Leela Rangaswamy, M.D.; loving father of Janine (Rob) and Daniel (Elyse); adored grandfather ('Tata') to Ben, Michael, Jordan, Noa and Anya. Devoted son, brother, uncle, and brother-in-law, and is also survived by his former wife, Marion Hart, M.D. Born in 1934, Dr. Hart grew up in the Bronx. He graduated from The Bronx High School of Science in 1952, worked summers as a busboy at the Brickman Hotel in the Catskills, and graduated from NYU and SUNY Downstate Medical Center. He went on to become a Child and Adult Psychiatrist whose career spanned six decades. In addition to his private practice, he served as Director of Child and Adolescent Services at Rockland County Community Mental Health Center, also serving briefly as its Acting Director. He was Director of Rise West School and a Pediatric Psychiatrist at Helen Hayes Hospital. He was a gifted teacher, lecturer and mentor who served as Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Hart also proudly served as Captain and medical doctor in the United States Army. After working for many years in New York, he moved to Boston and served as Senior Consulting Psychiatrist at Arbour Counseling Services, retiring early at the age of 84.

Dr. Hart was a voracious reader and learner, a student of history, art and music, always keeping up with the latest medical literature in his field as well as the newest hardcover release of a favorite author. He loved theatre and opera, and could also be happy watching a marathon of Columbo reruns. He could be expected to wear a tie to almost every occasion, and vehemently eschewed the trend toward baseball cap and sandal-casual.

Marty will be remembered for his intellect, his quick and irreverent sense of humor, his generosity with his time, resources, and wisdom to family, friends, patients and colleagues. He was driven and hard-working, never so happy as when he was gliding (at excessive speed) down the highway to his office, with a bag of new action figures for his young patients. His home and office were infused with whimsy and joy, a spirit he brought both to his profession and his family.

Our family wishes to extend a special thanks to the extraordinary, kind and caring health care staff at Stonegates, who provided exceptional care and comfort to Marty and his family, and to his wonderful doctors who also became his friends.

Funeral services will be held at Schoenberg Memorial Chapel, Wilmington, Delaware, on Monday July 19 at 12:00 noon. Shiva will be observed immediately following the service at his home.

Although Dr. Hart was highly accomplished and traveled the world, he was, at heart, just a kid from the Bronx. Donations in his memory may be made to Bronx Science Alumni Foundation at www.bxscience.edu/give.

Dr. Hart was a great friend and my hero. He was intelligent, brave, caring, and honest. He told you like it is and we all loved that about him. But he was also witty. He had what it took to be such a great child psychiatrist, mentor and friend. I worked alongside him for almost 15years. He was the most amazing person I have ever known. He made such an impact in so many lives including mine and for that I will forever be grateful. He will live on in our hearts and all the memories he left behind. He will truly be missed. My deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

I met Martin as a camp counselor at Camp Mohawk where Janine and Daniel were campers. I became a babysitter for Janine and Daniel for years. Martin was a wonderful person and mentor (always bought me the Sunday NYT on Saturday nights), and was generous with his time and advice when I needed it- through college and law school. My fond memories of his laughter still remain with me.
