Michael Johnson Obituary

Michael James Johnson

Philadelphia, PA

Michael James Johnson, of Philadelphia, PA passed away on Tuesday, December 31, 2013. Born on February 4, 1946 in Pennsgrove, NJ, he was the son of the late Helen M. Fonto and John T. Johnson. Of the many talents that Mike possessed, he excelled in diving where he was a Delaware state champion. At the same time he was involved in baseball leagues in Pennsgrove, NJ, and Newark, DE where he was known for his lightning speed and hard hitting which landed him a position with the semiprofessional Delaware Clippers team. At 15, Mike began playing pool which involved him in competing in tournaments around the country and led to a life-long passion for the game.

In 1975, Mike joined the Vision Quest family and during this time was a mentor, friend, co-worker, and leader to many troubled youth. He ran programs from Mt. Lemon, Tucson, Elfrida, Colorado Springs, Franklin, South Mountain, Embreeville, and Oklahoma. In 1996, Mike took his wagon train The Silver Buffalo from Yeehaw Junction, FL to Coatesville, PA then on to Ohio, then Oklahoma to finish in Uvalde, TX. Of special note was that during the entire year on the Silver Buffalo despite traveling so close to their homes in Philadelphia, not one youth attempted to abscond. On the Vision Quest wagon train, crisscrossing the country, he taught youth how to build confidence, be responsible, and make the most of their lives. He lived the Vision Quest mantra by keeping those in his life at the center of his circle. He was a remarkable man with a big personality that was indelible and contagious to those he met. In the 25 years as a leader at Vision Quest, he touched numerous lives and made a difference for so many. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him. Prior to Vision Quest, Mike was a skilled barber working with his friend Johnny Walker. He also managed nightclubs in the State of Delaware.

Mike is survived by his wife, Melanie Benaquis Johnson; his sister, Diane Johnson; his children, Laurie Kreider, Stephanie Tolson, and Jake Johnson; his grandchildren: Riley Hurley, Taylor Hurley, Kaitlynn Kreider, Madison Tolson, and Reagan Tolson, Parker Johnson, Mikey Johnson, and Connor Johnson. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Johnson in July of 2013.

A Memorial Service will be held at Faries Funeral Home, 29 S. Main St., Smyrna, DE on Sunday, January 12, 2014. Visitation from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. Memorial service beginning at 2:00 p.m. Condolence letters may be sent by visiting www.fariesfuneralhome.com.

Met Mike in the 70's. Had the pleasure of working with him and having good times with him too. He hired my future wife at that time and warned me to keep away. I guess it's like when your Dad tells you not to do something and you've just gotta try. Well it led to a wonderful marriage, so he's always been an important part of my life. A lot of years passed and we reconnected. I'm very thankful for that and being able to spend a little time with him. What a great man and one of the toughest guys I've ever met. I'm hopeful that he's more comfortable now. Big Mike!

May the Angels cradle his lovely wife, his children, family & friends as they grieve his unnecessary passing. Mike was a very good person; a person I will greatly miss. I always thought he and Kenny Rogers resemble each other. I will never forget the love he had for his children and people in general.

I met Mike when he was Wagon Master of the Silver Buffalo Wagon Train. He was a wonderful man. I worked on the Vision Quest Trip Team out of Franklin PA! I just wish I could have gotten to know him better. My deepest condolences to his family, especially his wife Melanie.

I appreciated Mike very much, especially the love he expressed for my sister, Melanie. I was impressed by how much they loved each other. He made many friends due to the good man that he was. He had a hearty laugh. I saw what an excellent pool player he was and had heard how dedicated he was to the kids for whom he was responsible for in Vision Quest. He will be missed.

We met Mike in Franklin, Pa VisiionQuest Big Lodge. What a great leader. Our love and prayers go to support Melanie and the family and many friends he made in his walk in life. No greater man that God placed upon this earth fulfilled what God wanted him to do. That was to go among all people and show love and teach them about God. He didn't have to preach, thru Mike, he showed young and old how much God loves us. Mike was full of life and love when he walked among us. Every life he touched was made richer and better. Thank you God for your faithful servant, Mike Johnson. May you bring peace to his family, knowing that he is with you now. His job here on earth is done. Love and prayers, Jim and Carolyn Baughman and family

I had the privilege of meeting Mike through my dear friend, his sister Diane, and was fortunate to have celebrated various birthdays and Thanksgivings with him and his family. These were great times. Mike's sense of humor and way of expression were unique, as was his laugh...which I can hear so clearly. My heart reaches out to all of his family and friends at this time.

In celebration of a beautiful man we had the great opportunity of meeting and knowing in this life. Thank you, Mike, for your warmth, giving spirit, and for so many great memories. I know you're here with us. Your presence is truly indelible and grand. Thank you for being wonderfully you.

i had the great fortune of being Mike Johnson's sister. That is how they knew me in our neighborhood. The boys always expressed a kind of respect and the girls, well, they were hoping to come over because maybe Mike would be around. I knew early on i had a special brother!
In the summer at the Brookside Swim Club, Mike was a legend.Self taught he had mastered the high diving board at an early age. He was fearless. Standing on the diving board, the crowd was silenced and no one moved until he completed his dive. He was inspiring to watch. I was proud to be Mike Johnson's sister.
How those years flew by amazed me. Flash forward 15 years and i am meeting the boys in Mike's programs in all the various places. "Hey, you're Mike Johnson's sister?" "He's a great guy, that's cool we really love Mike." Man, was i proud to be Mike Johnson's sister.
He was the rock for so many people, and it made us less afraid. And when it came time that he needed people to be his rocks, they were there. That is what loving and being loved is all about. And as i look around and see all the people my brother's life touched, again i say "i am honored to be Mike Johnson's sister."

When I think of Mike, I see him diving off the board of pool in Brookside. I also think of "my hero" who took me to the emergency room--a night I will never forget back in the 60's. I often wondered where life took him, and I am not surprised to read that he continued to be a hero. I was privileged to know him.

Mike always seemed bigger than life and kept me smiling throughout our 12 years working together and well beyond. He taught me to play horseshoes and, as a team, we were undefeated. He gave me endless exciting car trips and and his unwavering support at work. He was a good friend and will be greatly missed. May his journey home be lighted by our love for him.
