Paul Krusic Obituary

Paul Joseph Krusic

Wilmington - Paul Joseph , age 82, who died unexpectedly from injuries sustained in a fall on Oct. 28, 2017, was born in Sezana, Slovenia, on the Italian border, Nov. 28, 1934. He was the second of three children of Pavel Josef Krusic, a merchant, and Erminija Krusic, nee Gerbec.

Paul studied at various schools in Postojna, Slovenia, and in Trieste, Italy, where the family moved as refugees after World War II. He attended the University of Trieste and was granted a Fulbright Scholarship to attend Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT. After graduating from Wesleyan, he worked at General Electric in Schenectady, NY, before moving with his family to California to begin his doctoral studies in chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley. He obtained his doctorate in physical chemistry in 1966, and went to work at DuPont, in Wilmington, DE, as a research chemist. He was a visiting professor in Slovenia in 1972, and in France in 1983 and 1988. He is the author of more than 100 scientific papers, and holds seven U.S. patents. In 1976, he organized a symposium on fluorine-containing free radicals, and in 1986, he was chairman of the Gordon Research Conference on Radical Ions.

Paul was a true Renaissance man, with many and varied interests. He spoke several languages, Slovenian and a Slovenian dialect, Italian and the Triestino dialect, English and French, and was a voracious reader of books and periodicals in these languages. He read Time, The Economist, and C&E News every week. He also read La Repubblica online every day, subscribed to mladika, a monthly periodical in Slovenian, and never missed the New York Times Book Review on Sunday. Paul enjoyed traveling with his wife, Louise, and they organized vacations every year in Europe to bring the family together. An avid hiker, he did some serious mountaineering in his youth, including rock climbing, and continued hiking throughout his life. He enjoyed skiing, photography, cooking and gardening, and was especially proud of the dahlias he cultivated. He was also handy at plumbing and electrical repairs and did volunteer work at the Green Acres pool for years. But above all his hobbies, he loved classical music and playing the piano. An especially favorite pastime was spending time with his grandchildren, and he always found fun and interesting activities to share with them.

In addition to his wife, Louise Allen, Paul is survived by his brother, Marijan Krusic (Vera), his son, Paul Krusic Jr. (Anna), two daughters, Sonja O'Donnell (Michael), and Mara Carmean (Sean), his step-daughter, Cristina Sanchis (Jeff Passerini), and five grandchildren, Julian O'Donnell, Calvin Carmean, Jonas Krusic, Kane Carmean and Amarita Krusic. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Slavko Tratnik and his former wife, Mary Tillotta. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister, Annamaria Tratnik and his cousin Viktorija Novak.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 18, at 11 a.m., at the DuPont Country Club, 1001 Rockland Road, Wilmington, DE. Calling hours will be Friday, Nov. 17, from 6-8 p.m. at McCrery & Harra Funeral home, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington DE.

Its hard to bring yourself to write a message about paul, he was so kind so thoughtful about the people he loved and those who he only just met. His kind hearted spirit kept me going through tough times in school and loosing him is the worst feeling ever. I can just barely bring myself to write this now after two years its been so hard without him. He was always there to cheer you up when u where sad or calm you down if you got angry. He would take our family on beautiful vacation and he would always loose something, we went to france one summer and he lost an entire bad full of things. We share these memories that we will never forget, he inspired me to play the piano and want to live longer than I intended. I find it so hard to write this and i want to thank those that wrote such kind and meaningful message here. He will always be in my heart no matter what and he will always be my best friend. Love rita.

I worked with Paul at DuPont's Experimental Station for half a decade in the 1990s, and every encounter with him made me realize how lucky I was to have such fabulously interesting people as colleagues! Paul not only was a brilliant scientist but also was brimming with the spirit of life. Our far-reaching philosophical discussions will never be forgotten, nor will his endearing kindness. My deepest condolences to his family...

Sim and I would like to offer our condolences to Louise and all the family. I first met Paul while working at the Experimental Station and we spent some time together when Sim and Louise were working in P&IP. He was a brilliant scientist and was well respected by his peers. He was adept at bringing a smile to your face even in the most serious of discussions and never shy to demonstrate his skills on the piano. We will truly miss him.

So sorry to hear of this unexpected loss. I remember Paul as a brilliant scientist and a light-hearted character. Long after his retirement I would occasionally run into him on my walk home, while he was visiting his grand-children in our neighborhood. He was always gracious and would share a quick story of how things used to be and how they've become. Paul was a real gem! My condolences to the family.

So sorry to hear of Paul's sudden passing. I was in an adjacent office at the Du Pont Experimental Station, E356 from 1977-1990, which seems like a lifetime ago. Paul had an indominatable spirit and a love of life. At that time "Du Pont University" had some of the best chemical research in the country and Paul led the field, and world, in EPR. I had the privilege of using some of his liquid helium techniques to make some fundamental measurements which aided my research immensely. I also recall his 50th birthdat party....and we shared many office experiences!
To his children, along with Mary and Louise, I wish I had stayed in closer touch when I left Wilmington at the dissolution of Du Pont Pharmaceuticals to move back to the West Coast. As a resident of CA, I know how much he loved the spirit of Berkeley and the mountains here, which reminded him of Italy. He is the ONLY person I know in life to have been strafed as a child by the RAF during WWII!
I do miss our times together.
