Phyllis Stanton Obituary

Phyllis Maynard Stanton

AGE: 98 • Hockessin, Del.

Phyllis Maynard Stanton passed peacefully from this earth on August 5, 2016, after a short illness, with family and friends at her bedside.

Phyllis Deane Rupright, the daughter of Howard J. and Mona Sanderson Rupright, was born in Cleveland, Ohio and raised in Midland, Michigan. While attending the University of Michigan she married Carl Wesley Maynard, Jr. in January 1937. She also attended Boston University while Carl completed his doctorate in Chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Carl and Phyllis moved to Clayton Street in Wilmington in 1939 and lived for many years in Windsor Hills, Talleyville. Phyllis was active in Westminster Presbyterian Church Women's Association and as a Deacon. She was also an active member of the DuPont Bowling League, the DuPont Country Club Associate Women's League and Alpha Delta Pi sorority. Carl and Phyllis devoted 10 years to the American Field Service, hosting Eva Jonsson and Christine Heden of Sweden, Aude Thomasset of France, Paivi Pentilla of Finland and Eileen Brannigan of the Republic of South Africa, her "AFS Daughters".

Phyllis is survived by Carl's nephews: David (Portland, OR), Craig (Kingston, RI), Edward (Colorado Springs, CO), John (Berkeley, CA) and Brian Maynard (Peace Dale, RI), and their families. Phyllis was predeceased by her sister Shirley Sydney and is survived by Shirley's sons: Gilbert (Greeley, CO), Craig (Georgetown, TX) and Scott Sydney (Waterford, CT) and their families.

Following Carl's death in 1997, after 60 years of marriage, Phyllis moved to Cokesbury Village, where she was active with the Social Events Committee and many White Elephant sales. In August 2005 she married William A. Stanton, and their whirlwind romance lasted until his death in May 2008. Phyllis is also survived by Bill's loving children: Donald (Boston, MA), Robert (Midlothian, VA) and Linda (St. Paul, MN) and their families. Special thanks to Bob and Maggie Stanton for their loving friendship and endless support.

In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be sent to the ACTS Legacy Foundation - Cokesbury Staff Scholarship, 726 Loveville Road, Suite 3000, Hockessin, DE 19707-1536.

A Memorial Service is being planned for early November at Cokesbury Village.

I had the pleasure of knowing Phyllis at Cokesbury Village. I assisted her with her computer for years - both before and after she married Bill Stanton. She was a wonderful person - full of fun! I enjoyed having the opportunity to know her. She will be greatly missed!

Phyllis was such a lovely lady, very friendly and caring about others. I used to sit with her many times at worship in the transcept side of the church by the pulpit and she was like a "mother" to the other Cokesbury residents who came with her each week. She would always look after them and make certain that they were allright! She will be greatly missed by all of us at WPC but now she will be with her Lord and family members in His kingdom where she will care for others I'm sure!! God Bless You, dear Phyllis.
