Sarah Jane Wood

AGE: 19 • Dagsboro

Sarah Jane Wood, age 19 of Dagsboro, DE passed away on Sunday, December 18, 2016 at her home due to an accidental drug overdose of heroin.

Sarah was born in Falls Church, VA on December 7, 1997 to Lawrence and Margaret (Gebhardt) Wood. She graduated from Indian River High School Class of 2016 and was a freshman at the University of Delaware, where she had just made the Dean's List.

Sarah was a beautiful, nonconformist, young woman who had a passion for learning and was a champion for the underdog. She will be fondly remembered as a talented artist, an amazing writer and an avid photographer. She was unapologetically herself and didn't care what anyone said. While at Indian River High School Sarah was the President of the Technology Student Association. An English teacher commented that Sarah never backed down from a good argument. Sarah loved playing soccer and participated in the River Soccer Club since the age of six and was also part of the Indian River High School JV Soccer team. She and her twin brother, Sam had a loving and inseparable bond. Not only did Sarah love all people, she extended that love to cats, dogs and even the sloth!

She is survived by her parents, Larry and Margie Wood of Dagsboro, DE; four siblings, Matthew Wood and his fiancé, Heather Spannbauer of Millsboro, DE, Katy Wood of Dagsboro, DE, Timothy Wood and his significant other, Elizabeth Ewing of Georgetown, DE and her twin brother, Sam Wood and his significant other, Cher Robinson of Dagsboro, DE; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins and a host of friends.

A visitation will be held from 3-6 PM on Thursday, December 22, 2016 at the Ocean View Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 38040 Muddy Neck Rd., Ocean View, DE 19970. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM on Friday, December 23, 2016 at St. Ann Catholic Church, 691 Garfield Parkway, Bethany Beach, DE 19930. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Dagsboro, DE.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Lord Baltimore Lioness Club P.O. Box 525, Ocean View, DE 19970.

Another precious life lost to a Drug that is killing our children.
I lost my Nephew a little over 6 months ago to a Heroin overdose also.
His girlfriend was pregnant with his child and she delivered 2 weeks later.
Grace is her name and my Nephew is the one that named her and was so excited about meeting his new baby girl. Did he know he would not be here today to see his baby Grow up? No. The Drug took his life way to soon...
God Bless you as you say your goodbyes to your daughter.

My heart breaks for your family.. Your daughter is lovely and I know you are very proud of her accomplishments. Thank you for sharing this, this drug affects us all! I know 2 boys that overdosed on heroin in the last year. My son overdosed 4 times last year alone. He has been crippled by this horrible drug for over 15 years now. He actually traveled back east to get the stronger stuff, that resulted in many of those overdoses. He wonders why it's not him that's dead instead of all of his friends. I don't know why I'm writing a complete stranger except that I feel so sad for your family right now. I pray that God would hold you near and Bless your family especially during the holiday season. Praise God we have hope in Christ Jesus.❤ In Christs Love,Rhonda Self

Dear Sam and all other family members, I directed this note to Sam because he was the twin of Sarah. I know what Sam is going through losing his twin sister because I lost my twin sister four years ago. My twin sister was the grandmother of HF Wilgus who was a couple years older than you but he also graduated from Indian River high school. It hurts to lose a sibling as I had lost my other sister 11 months before losing my twin, but when you lose your twin it is like you have lost a part of yourself. Your twin will always be with you. You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

My deepest sympathies to all of you. I don't know you, but could easily be in your shoes. My nephew was rushed to the hospital a few weeks ago in the same manner. Fortunately, he was found in time to be helped. I want to thank you for the honesty in losing this beautiful talented lady. The horrors and lies of the seduction of drugs is stealing our precious youth. My nephew is married with a precious infant and everything he could want. I pray for peace for your family. May Sarah's story reach out to touch and save others who think just one more time. It won't take away your grief and heartache, but may your fight to educate give you a peace to know there may be one out there for whom Sarah's loss can make a difference. May God bless and comfort you.
