Thomas Yohe Obituary

Thomas L. Yohe

Tom conquered many mountains in his 57 years of life, both literally and figuratively. He was just too tired to scale this last one. Tom passed away in his sleep early Easter morning beside Jeanne Marie, his wife of 29 years. Diagnosed in 2000 with throat cancer, Tom endured debilitating treatment and endless treatment-related health problems, only to rise above each set-back and adapt bravely and creatively. Stories of his resilience to survive have, and will continue to, inspire his friends and family.

Besides his wife, Tom is survived by his three children, Stefan (Boston, MA), Luke, and Hana (Wilmington, DE), and three sisters, Marie Novak (Edinboro, PA), Jennie Ord (Elkton, MD), and Cathy Hanton (Jarvisburg, NC). Tom was predeceased by his mother, Helen Yohe. A very large extended family and multitude of friends too numerous to mention are grieving Tom's loss as well. We, his family, hold you in our hearts and thank you for your years of support and continued friendship. We are also forever indebted to the numerous medical professionals that treated Tom's ailments over the last 12 years, allowing him to spend many more fruitful years with his family and friends.

Tom was born in Beaver Falls, PA. He attended Penn State University where he earned a Master's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling. It was in State College, PA that Tom met Jeanne Marie on a blind date set up by a mutual friend. Tom took his first professional job in Philadelphia, became reacquainted with Jeanne Marie and married. In 1986, Tom founded Delaware Valley Rehabilitation Services in Wilmington, DE. Tom enjoyed 15 years of successful business until his failing health caused him to close his company.

Tom's first love was his wife and children. He had an unquenchable thirst for the outdoors and was in the woods whenever he was able. He had a love for playing, listening to, and creating music, and especially loved playing guitar with friends. His keen intellect and sense of humor was known and loved to Tom's friends and family. He took nothing at face value, and enjoyed discussing politics, religion, and life's unknowns. Tom reinvented himself many times during his 12 year fight, and became an avid photographer and web designer. Tom will be missed by the organizations to which he devoted countless hours of volunteer work and guidance, especially Boy Scout Troop 67, the support group for head and neck cancer at the Hosp. of the Univ. of Penn and the Community for Integrative Learning.

We will publicly celebrate Tom's life on Saturday, April 14th, at 4:00 PM at St. David's Episcopal Church at 2320 Grubb Rd., North Wilmington. The family will begin receiving family and friends at 3:00 PM. If you care to make a contribution in Tom's name you may contribute to SPOHNC (Support for People with Oral and Head and Neck Cancer, www.spohnc.org) or to the organization of your choice. I had the honor of caring for Tom in the short time he spent in the Wilmington Hospital ICU. I could tell both he and his family were pretty special.
I remember at one point I was speaking to him of a song that was stuck in my head. It was a song by Roger Miller - "Dang Me". Even though Tom had no voice, with his hand he mimcked the tune and at that moment I could hear him sing.
I thank Tom and his family for embodying true bravery and love during some very difficult times. I wish you peace.

Tom,
So far - I had my longest employment run with you and the Del Val Family! I am always proud to say I worked at Del Val for over 10 years. How I miss those days. Not only was it a great place to work, lifelong friendships developed because of you, Jeamer and Del Val. You fought the hard fight for a long time. I don't think anyone else could have been any braver. Now it is time for you to rest. Your family will be ok. You gave them the strength to make it through. Jeamer and family- know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. Love,

I am so sad to learn this news. Though I have not seen Tom often in recent years, at a difficult time in my life I had the honor of being in a prayer group with Tom at St. Davids. I learned from him and prayed with him, and he touched my heart. God Bless you all, Yohe family. Tom, I know you are having a grand time in Heaven. XO Leeanne Henretty

Jeamer and family,

I am saddened by the death of Tom, whom I was just getting to know via FB and Email. My heart hurts for your family, yet I am rejoicing because he has no pain, anymore! I always looked forward to his responses to my Emails or my blog. His comments were very thoughtful and eloquent. Thanks Tom for encouraging me to continue writing.

Peace to you cousin, say hi to my dad and mom in heaven for me.

Jeamer, Stefan, Luke and Hana,
My thoughts and prayers are always with you. Your loss...is a loss for me as well, and for the world.
I do think however that Tom's light and love will be always with you, the ones he loved so dearly..and he will live on in our hearts and minds for as long as we breathe. I like to think that he's enjoying a meat ball sub and a cold beer ..and probabaly getting sauce stains on his angel wings. I am sorry I can't be with you on Saturday but will see you all the following week. Rest in Peace Tom...the world lost much goodness when you left us. Thanks for everything.I will miss you.

My heart felt condolences and sympathy to Tom's family and friends. The world will be a different place without him in your lives.
Tom's death reminds me of my own mortality. The Wheel of Life continues to turn and will eventually carry each of us to the end of its path. All of us will face that time when we take our last breath. A celebration of Tom's life is fitting and appropriate. I am reminded of a passage from Psalms, “Raise a joyful noise unto the Lord …” and what could be more joyful than the sounds of celebration! Indeed, let each of us celebrate our own lives each and every day for we never know when our own time will come.
