"Jim" Callahan
Mr. Walter James "Jim" Callahan, age 75, of Bear, DE, formerly of Elkton, MD, died on Monday, November 10, 2008.
Born in Lancaster, PA on June 17, 1933, Mr. Callahan was the son of the late Mary and Walter James Callahan, Sr. He was a proud member of the US Navy from 1956 to 1960, serving his country as a military photographer. In civilian life, he was employed for a time with his family's contracting firm, Callahan Builders. He later accepted a position with James Julian, Inc. in Wilmington and would go on to earn his degree in accounting from Goldey Beacom College. He retired from James Julian as a senior accountant after many years of service. Active in his community, he was a longtime member of the Kiwanis Club. Mr. Callahan was a talented athlete throughout his life, and enjoyed all types of sports. From 1963 to 1964, he was the Maryland State Singles Bowling Champion. He also enjoyed archery, target shooting, and, later in life, playing golf with friends. He was a skilled craftsman, as well, and was well known for creating beautiful cabinets. Most of all, he was a devoted family man, who delighted especially in spending time with his beloved grandson, of whom he was very proud.
His wife of 49 years, Eleanor E. "Miss Ellie" Callahan, died in 2006. He is survived by his son, Kevin Callahan and wife, Carla; daughter, Karen Shanks and husband, Warren; brother, Tim Callahan; and grandson, Conner Q. Callahan.
The funeral service will be held privately and at the convenience of the family.
