Walter M. Hayman passed away at the age of 80 at his home on November 24, 2008.
Born in Wilmington, DE on March 31, 1928 he was the son of the late Walter M. Hayman Sr. and Fannie Bryan Hayman. Mr. Hayman served in the United States Navy and was stationed at Pearl Harbor during World War II. After his discharge from the Navy he worked for the General Motors Corporation in Newport, DE. In 1950 he began a career with the DuPont Company that lasted 29 years with most of his tenure as a textile technician at the Chestnut Run site. Mr. Hayman joined the Brandywine Hundred Fire Company in 1946 and he was a member for 62 years. He served on the Board of Directors, held the position of fire lieutenant and was on various committees, including Fund Drive and Special Events. As a young man Mr. Hayman enjoyed playing baseball and basketball in numerous leagues around Wilmington. He was an avid bowler and in his later years he enjoyed fishing and golfing. He was a former member of the DuPont Country Club, the Hercules Country Club, and the Hall-Burke VFW Post 5447. He was a skilled craftsman and during his retirement made wooden clocks for sale at local craft fairs.
He was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Virginia Louise Hayman. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Grace Ferguson Hayman; his sons, William B. Hayman, Robert J. Hayman and his wife Catherine Soule Hayman and his grandchildren, Laura E. Hayman, Erica L. Hayman, Juliana C. Hayman, Michael W. Hayman and James W. Hayman.
The family would like to express their appreciation and gratitude to Dr. Paul Pennock, Dr. James Loughran and their respective staff for their years of dedicated care.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 6-8 pm, on Sunday November 30, at the DOHERTY FUNERAL HOME, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Helena's Roman Catholic Church, 602 Philadelphia Pike, Bellefonte on Monday, December 1, at 10 am. The interment will be in All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington, DE.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to St. Helena's Church or to the Brandywine Hundred Fire Company.
