Age 96, of Wilmington, DE, passed away at home on October 25, 2009.
Walter was a machine tender for the former Doeskin Paper Mill Co. He retired in 1970. He was a life member of the Pulaski Legion, the Polish Library and the 11th Ward Democratic Club. He was active in the original St. Hedwig's Senior Center, now the Claymore Center and the Frames Senior Center. He also loved to sing, especially his rendition of "Sto Lat" to family and friends on their birthdays.
Walter is survived by his wife of 73 years, Mary (Szymanski) Ratasiewicz; a son, Walter A. Jr., of Wilmington, DE; a daughter, Marianne R. Buffington and her husband Frank, of Wilmington, DE; 6 grandchildren, Walt Ratasiewicz and his wife Cathi, Ron Ratasiewicz and his wife Winnie, Mary Buffington and her husband Ben Bauer, Monica Buffington and her husband Jonathan Humphrey, Michelle Buffington and her partner Rockwell Harwood and Marcia Doughterty and her husband Jim; 7 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Walter was preceded in death by his brothers, Anthony and Stanley; his sisters, Sophie Smith and Jenny Ringland and by his daughter-in-law, Patsy (Baker) Ratasiewicz.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered in St. Hedwig Church, Linden & S. Harrison Sts., at 10:30 am, on Thursday, October 29, where visitation will begin at 9:30 am. Burial will follow in the Cathedral Cemetery, Wilmington, DE.
In lieu of flowers, the family memorial contributions be sent to St. Hedwig's Twin Spire Campaign, 408 S. Harrison St., Wilmington, DE 19805; or to the Claymore Senior Center, 504 S. Clayton St., Wilmington, DE 19805.
