ALice Trout Smith

1927 - 2021

Mrs. Alice Trout Smith, of Downingtown, Pennsylvania, age 94, passed away at her residence in Richmond, Virginia on July 12, 2021. Alice was born in Gap, Pennsylvania in 1927 to the late Charles Livingston Trout and Edith Sweigart Trout. After graduation from Upper Darby High School, she earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania. In 1953, she and William (“Bill”) Stevens Smith were married. As Bill pursued his career in finance, she and Bill lived in several locations including Philadelphia, PA; Bay Village, OH; Newtown Square, PA; Ft. Lauderdale, FL; and Falls Church, VA before retiring to Downingtown, PA. Throughout her life, Alice was actively involved in the Episcopal Church, as organist and choir director at both St. Giles in Philadelphia and the Church of the Redeemer in Springfield, PA. Alice served as a member of the Altar Guild at St. Albans Episcopal Church in Newtown Square and St. James’s Church in Downingtown, PA. She was also a member of the Chester County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Alice was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and a good friend to many. Alice loved gardening, classical music, and needlework. She won prizes at several local fairs for her embroidery work and made wonderful contributions to the churches where she served on the Altar Guild. During her career, Alice also worked as an administrative assistant for two eye surgeons, and her connections in that field were invaluable in helping her grandson receive the most advanced surgery available to address strabismus. Alice was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, William Stevens Smith, and her parents Charles Livingston Trout and Edith Swiegart Trout. She is survived by her children and their spouses: Stephen, Andrew (Deborah), and Johanna (Thomas) Coulter; and eight grandchildren. Service and internment will be at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in memory of Alice T. Smith be directed to Dr. David Guyton’s Research at The Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute and sent to: Kathy Anglemyer, Sr. Assoc. Director of Development: Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute, 600 N.
