Irene Ruth Sharp

Irene Ruth Sharp (nee Brown), 91, of Glen Mills, PA passed away on October 15, 2023, at Crozer-Chester Medical Center after a lengthy illness. She was born in Portland, Oregon on February 13, 1932, the youngest of seven children of Jesse D. Brown and Irene Bell (Coffman) Brown. She is survived by her husband of sixty-five years, Ralph Lawrence (Larry) Sharp and her children, Kate Bodin of Portland OR., Peggy Hellyer (John) of Shreveport, LA and Susan Sharp of Media, PA. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Justin Light of Portland, OR and Scott Snell (Bess) of Smyrna, DE, three great grandchildren, Odette Light, Lucien Light and Daphne Snell, and several nieces and nephews. After graduating from high school, Irene followed her sister Dorothy to Charleston, West Virginia. After Dorothy married and moved to Media, Irene followed her there as well. She worked as a secretary at Aldon Rug Mills until the birth of her children. In 1968, she went to work at Weathers Dodge, retiring as office manager in 1997. Irene and Larry enjoyed traveling in their retirement, including a six-week road trip to the West Coast, cruises through the Panama Canal and to Alaska, among others, and trips to Iceland and throughout the United States and Canada. In 2006, they sold the house in Middletown Township that they had lived in for almost 43 years and moved to the Maris Grove Senior Living Community. Irene was an avid reader. While her daughters were growing up, Irene was active in the Lima Fire Company Auxiliary and served as president for a year. She also taught Sunday school at Lima United Methodist Church and was a troop leader for Girl Scout Troop 65 of Media. After retirement, she was a Pink Lady volunteer at Riddle Memorial Hospital. After moving to Maris Grove, she was active in the Treasure Chest thrift store, and she welcomed the use of the pool as she had a lifelong love of swimming. Irene and Larry enjoyed meeting their many friends for dinner and Saturday breakfast. Irene was a strong woman who forged her own path in the world and did things her own way. Always.
