Joanne Malmsjo Obituary

1938-2016 Joanne Malmsjo (nee McKee), long time resident of Springfield, Delaware Co, PA, passed away suddenly, at home, on February 18, 2016 at the age of 78. Born in Upland, she was the daughter of the late James and Ethel (nee Yeatman) McKee, Jr. of Rose Valley. Predeceased by her husband Gustav C. Malmsjo, she is survived by her brother David James McKee (Mary Lou) of West Grove; her sister-in-law Beatrice Letcher of Lebanon; her nieces and nephews James McKee (Kathy) of Gaithersburg, MD, Christopher McKee (Ginny) of Brookhaven, Sara Ferrar (nee McKee; Chris) of Statesville, NC, Julie Dietz of Ocoee, FL and Sharon Ostergaard (nee Dietz, Daniel) of Atlanta, GA; grand nieces and nephews Riley Ferrar, Sebastian Ferrar (Molly), Kyle Jameson and Sophia Ostergaard. A graduate of Nether Providence High School, she excelled in sports, playing hockey, basketball and softball. Her musical talents were expressed in playing in the band, orchestra, dance band, and singing in the chorus. She graduated from West Chester University with a BS in Health and Physical Education and General Sciences. She became a physical education teacher at Tome Street Elementary, later known as Ridley Park Elementary School, and Lakeview Elementary. Ridley Park High School (prior to the merger with Ridley and Eddystone) hired her as their hockey and basketball coach. Over the years she loved running into her 4 generations of students as she moved about the community she so enjoyed. In her later years she would entice them to squeak the red horn on her walker. She loved Springfield and thought her neighbors were the very best-her extended family. She made deep friendships with those who served her, whether at local restaurants, her hairdressers, the pharmacy or grocery shopping. Pitching for women’s fast and slow pitch leagues, bowling and singing in the Ridley Community Chorus were her joys. She will be deeply missed. I was shocked when I heard the news. She was my gym teacher while I was at Lakeview in the '70's. She inspired me to be the best athlete I could be. She taught us to play fair & enjoy being active. She was truly had a passion for education and helping her students grow. My deepest sympathy and prayers to her family on your loss.

I remember Mrs. Malmsjo fondly as my gym teacher during my elementary days at Lakeview School. Especially remember playing "hide the keys" when stuck in our classrooms during bad weather. Thought it was neat we shared the same first name! My sympathy to her extended family.

Joanne was my gym teacher at Tome Street, my basketball coach at Ridley South, a colleague, and my golf buddy. She touched many people's heart in her lifetime and she will be deeply missed. My sympathies and thoughts to her family at this time. I feel fortunate I knew her.

I met Joanne as a kindergarten student at Tome St. school in 1962 and then had the privilege of working with her at Lakeview School when I returned there as the school nurse in 1987. I can still hear her voice calling me: "Nursey, Nursey." We shared wonderful memories and I enjoyed running in to her after her retirement. My deepest condolences to her extended family. She was a survivor despite medical issues. I know she will be pitching softball and rolling a bowling ball in the hereafter.
