Coach Schaefer was my first basketball coach in 9th grade. He taught me fundamentals of the game that served me well all the way to my playing Division I basketball in college. He was one of the best coaches I had in years of playing all types of sports. A real inspiration. Ed F

My condolences to Karl's family. He was a great person and always recognized me as the pretty one from NP. Karl always had a smile on his face and when I used to see Karl and his wife, Betty work out, I thought how marvelous. He walked with a walker but that didn't stop him. He will be missed as he sat in the a chair to the left of the gathering area. Rest in peace, Karl. You will be missed.

A very strong part of SHS and the community for decades, and an excellent basketball coach, a man who certainly knew the price of winning at every level-----of course, a legendary competitor and willing to work with the athletes, regardless of their skill level. his kind are already missed and unreplaceable today.

I just learned from Dave Pratzner and Rich Spallone that Karl had passed away. I saw him at my 50th Springfield High Reunion in 2012 where he was escorting coach Bill Mackrides. I shared my good memories of him with Rich Spallone. Anyone involved in sports always had nice comments about him. RIP coach

Mr Schaefer, "Schaef" as we referred to him, always stood out as a role model, even among a SHS faculty rich with extraordinarily influential teaching professionals. RIP, Mr. Schaefer and, Thank-You.

Karl was an incredible man. He was a very important teacher and coach in my formative years at Springfield. He taught me a great deal about social studies and how to throw the javelin. He will be missed.

Mr. Schaefer was my first, ever, male teacher when I entered 9th grade in 1961, transitioning over from St. Francis. I was so in awe of him, and loved when he told stories about how he beat Wilt Chamberlain. He also gave me my first "paying" job as the receptionist at the Prospect Park Swim Club over the next few years. He was truly an inspiration and a wonderful teacher.

My condolences to a terrific member of Springfield's athletics and education community. We played so many pickup basketball games together over the years. He will be missed.

Rest in Peace coach. I will always remember all the extra time you spent-often after dark-coaching me on all track field events...especially searching for the discus with a flashlight! Life lessons you taught live on in the students you touched...
