Lucy Stanovick Obituary

Lucy E. Stanovick, PhD, age 46 Of Saylorsburg, PA Lucy E. Stanovick, PhD, age 46, died August 16, 2012, at her home surrounded by her family. She was the wife of John Stanovick and they recently celebrated their 22nd wedding anniversary in July. Born in Bryn Mawr, she was the daughter of Dorothy (Fox) Elicker of Newtown Square and John Elicker, M.D. of Bryn Mawr. Lucy received her undergraduate in English from Shippensburg University where she received a scholarship to play lacrosse. She was a member of the Delta Rho Sorority. Her graduate and doctoral degrees were from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Lucy was an Associate Professor of English Education at East Stroudsburg University since 2003. In 2005, she helped establish and was the Director of the Northern Pennsylvania Writing Project, a federal grant funded program that provides K-16 educators with ongoing and continuous professional development in the teaching of writing. Lucy believed that the most effective teachers of writing are teachers who can appreciate their own writing. She helped educators recognize the value of their writing, be it professional or creative. Lucy's work with Teacher Candidates at ESU was grounded in the same philosophy. She taught hundreds of students, now teachers, in classrooms that their voices matter as do the voices of their students. Dr. Lucy, as she was known to all of her students, was an inspired and inspiring teacher and supportive colleague. Lucy loved family, home, reading, writing and her many friends from grade school through college. With laughter, passion and joy she embraced life. She loved to garden, sit by the pond, watching her family fish, and really enjoyed sunsets. Even knowing the outcome of her disease, she enjoyed planning future outdoor projects on the farm. Rest assured, "Lucy's bed" will be lush with plantings next year. She was active in her children's basketball programs and was a familiar sight at the scoring table keeping statistics when John coached. Nothing put her mind at ease more than sitting in a gym watching the kids play. She was on numerous committees in Saylorsburg and was an advisory board member for the National Foundation for Cancer Research where she championed and created The Lucy Fund whose mission is to have metastatic breast cancer become chronic, not deadly. Her favorite fundraiser has been Party4life which celebrated its fifth annual celebration last week. Her wish and family's commitment is to continue her mission to raise awareness and funds for metastatic disease. Survivors: In addition to her husband and parents, she is survived by 2 children, Nick and Katie Stanovick, both at home; her brother John Elicker Jr (Julie) of West Chester, PA; 2 sisters Beth Elicker of Cape Elizabeth, ME and Kathy Hoffman (Kurt) of West Chester, PA; 10 nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers or gifts, please send contributions to The Lucy Fund at The National Foundation for Cancer Research, 4600 East West Highway, Suite 525, Bethesda, MD 20814 Please write NFCR on the pay to the order line and The Lucy Fund on the memo line of your check or donate online at www.nfcr.org/lucyfund. Memorial services will be held on Monday, August 20th at 6 PM at Kresge Funeral Home, 1763 Route 209, Brodheadsville with Cory Romanowski officiating. Cremation will have taken place in the H. G. Smith Crematory, Stroudsburg. Visitation will be held on Monday from 5:00 PM until the time of the service. Online Condolences: www.kresgefuneralhome.com

Lucy was my tennis coach and senior year English teacher. We bonded on a level where she taught me to respect myself!! She changed my life and encouraged me to become who I am today!!! I can even remember her cutting my hair at a tennis match the night before my prom!!! She was an awesome woman!

May the angels hold you all in their arms and surround you with love and give you a semblance of peace as your hearts are heavy. Lucy has soared above us to a glorious and painless place. You will remain family forever and be with her again some day. Much love, Marjorie

I feel so fortunate to have had Lucy as an English professor and adviser during my graduate studies. I will begin my first year as an English teacher at Upper Darby HS in a few weeks, not far from Lucy's hometown. If I can be half as great of a teacher as Lucy, my students will be more than lucky. My deepest sympathies go out to Lucy's family and friends as they cope during this time. I know that they are fully aware of her ability to enrich the lives of others, a quality that will live through the people whom Lucy has taught, befriended, and loved.

With deepest sympathy to the family during your time of grief. Psalms 46:1 says " God is for us a refuge and strength. A help readily to be found during difficult times. May God provide you with peace and comfort to endure the days ahead.
