Margaret Culbert Obituary

Sister Margaret Culbert, S.S. J. Sister Margaret Culbert passed away on December 1, 2013 at Saint Joseph Villa in Flourtown, PA after a long illness. Sister Margaret was born on October 22, 1927 in Linwood, PA to Matthew and Margaret O'Reilly Culbert. Sister Margaret graduated from Notre Dame High School in Moylan, PA and then entered the Novitiate of the Sisters of Saint Joseph at Chestnut Hill, PA. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Chestnut Hill College and her Masters Degree from Catholic University, Washington, D.C. She also studied full time at Catholic University for certification in the Pastoral Ministry. Sister Margaret was appointed Vicar General Associate for Religious in the Washington Archdiocese. Before her retirement in 2002 Sister Margaret worked at Holy Redeemer Hospice in Wildwood, N.J., and was a Chaplain at Saint Francis Hospital I Wilmington, De. She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister Mary Culbert Imburgia, a brother Matthew F. Culbert, Sr., Nephew Matthew F. Culbert, Jr. and a Niece Teresa Imburgia DiCandilo. Survivors: Nieces; Mary Imburgia Morrison, Mary Jo Culbert Headley, Margie Culbert Kwapisz, Nephews: Michael Culbert, John (Jack) Imburgia. Also survived by many great-nieces and great-nephews. Visitation: Friday, December 6, 2013, from 1:30-2:30p.m., at St. Joseph Villa Catholic Church, 110 W. Wissahickon Ave., Flourtown, PA 19031 Funeral Mass: Will follow 3p.m. at Saint Joseph Villa. Sister Silvanus was my 4th grade teacher at St. Helena's in Bellefonte, DE 1950-51. I remember her as very young but very organized and energetic. Sorry I didn't keep in contact with her after that. She was my first exposure to the Sisters of St. Joseph (SSJ), having just transferred from another elementary school in Wilmington.

I had Sr. Sylvanus for 5th, 7th and 8th grades at St. Joe's in Cheltenham. She was one of the best teachers I ever had. Every subject she taught was presented as if it was her specialty. We were taught how important God should be in our lives. Ethics and morals were standards that we would be judged by not money or fame. God bless Sr. Sylvanus.

Sister Sylvanus was lendary at St. Joseph's, Cheltenham. Sister Sylvanus not only taught, she mentored her students teaching us how to play, trust, love, learn and live. I feel so very blessed to have been a student of this kind and caring soul.

I had Sr. Silvanus for three successive years, 4th through 6th grades, 1952-55, at St. Helena's School in Bellefonte, DE. I will always remember her as the nicest and most caring nun/teacher I ever knew. May she rest in peace.

Sister Margaret Culbert, aka Sister Silvanus , was a great teacher, mentor, and friend for 53 years since that famous 8th grade class of 1962 at St. Joseph in Cheltenham.
May all who knew her continue to carry her love of knowledge, her Irish wit, and her sense of justice into our world which continues to need such gifts.

She now enjoys the light of new life with our God in Heaven ... where we will meet her again! I thank God for the gift of her friendship. I too had Sr. Silvanus in 8th grade at St. Joes. She was fun and loving. She had a special prayer for all of her students that went on to join the military and fought in Vietnam. We will miss her and know that God called her to his side.

Sister Silvanus taught me in 8th grade (1959) at St. Joe's Cheltenham. She was the best teacher and nun I was ever associated with. She used to play basketball at recess with us and was not a bad player, either. Rest in peace, Sister. You were the best!
