Doris Taylor Obituary

Doris F. Taylor

Parsonsburg-Doris Downs Taylor, 86, of Parsonsburg, beloved mother, grandmother and community icon, was called to her eternal resting place on January 21, 2015. Born on January 23, 1928 in Willards, MD, to Guthrie and Laura Downs, she wed her husband of 53 years, J. Edward Taylor in 1949. They made their home in Parsonsburg where she was very active in the community at Jerusalem United Methodist Church and the fire dept ladies auxiliary for many years. Doris retired in 1989 as Director of Nursing of the Surgical Suite at PRMC following a 42-year career as mentor, friend and mother to many she called her children. She then became an active volunteer at the hospital and MAC Agency. Doris joined a Red Hatters group, and enjoyed monthly lunches with her retired nurse friends. She would always be found at local church dinners and bazaars and never passed up a good sale, sweets or ice cream. Her life was devoted to helping others and she earned her wings many times over before she left this world.

Preceded in death by her parents, husband and sister, Virginia Dennis, she is survived by two daughters; Valerie Wagner, and husband Bruce, of Pittsville, and Mindy West of Powellville; four grandchildren; Bruce Wagner, Jr and wife Julie of Parsonsburg, Nikki Wagner of Pittsville, and Brandon and Brady West of Powellville; one great grandson, Bryce Wagner; a niece and caregiver, Arelene Jones and several great nephews and nieces.

The family would also like to thank special family friend and nurse, Betty Marshall, for her devotion and care for Doris and the family.

A funeral service will be held at Holloway Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at 2:00pm with visitation Tuesday, January 27, 2015 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm and one hour prior to the funeral. Valerie, Mindy words can never explain how I loved your mom growing up here with her always around. She cared for this community, church and fire company with all her heart no matter how busy she was there was always time for her to go help out a community member who needed her. Sorry for your loss but God sure got a great lady this time.

I will never forget Doris Taylor. She was the Supervisor for the first 10 years of my nursing career. She was kind, she was fair, and she viewed every nurse in her charge with respect and encouragement. The healthcare world needs more like her.
