Jessie Smith Obituary

Jessie M. Smith

Pocomoke - Jessie M. Cottman Smith was born on Thursday, November 15, 1928 to the late Jesse T. and Virgie A. Cottman. She was reared in a small community known as Tindley's Chapel in Somerset County, Maryland. On Thursday, December 10, 2020, while at Tidal Health in Salisbury, Maryland, she transitioned from her earthly home to her heavenly home in glory.

Jessie's academic journey took her to places that some could only imagine because of her humble beginnings. After earning a Masters of Science in Library Science from Columbia University in New York City, New York, she returned to the Eastern Shore to begin her teaching career at Worcester High before making a career-move to her alma mater, Maryland State College (UMES) as first a Reference Librarian and then as the Director, before retiring as Dean of the Library.

In 1970, Jessie married the love of her life, Master Sergeant Morris B. Smith, on November 25, 1972. Morris and Jessie remained blissfully married until his passing on February 1, 2014.

A lifelong active member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church, Jessie served in various capacities, whenever and wherever needed. She was also devoted to her alma mater and proudly epitomized true school spirit at every opportunity.

Indelible memories of Jessie's life and legacy will be remembered by family and friends, far and near.

A celebration of life service will be held Wednesday, December 16, 2020, at 11 am with a viewing one hour prior to service, and Tuesday, December 15, 2020 from 6-8 pm both at Mt. Zion U.M. Church, Pocomoke, Md.

Jessie was a very special person. Working at UMES with her was a pleasure. Got to know her well as her sister shared a room with my Mother at Hartley Hall. What a tremendous loss of a dear friend.

Jessie we loved you so much. You and Morris was our family, Jessie I can hear you calling me all the time. You were truly missed by everyone. I loved your family so much. Nelva, I love you so much. I would love to be there. I would save her a sit every Sunday at church. Jessie waited until the last minute with her beautiful clothes. I gave her a bracelet and she loved it. Our prayers will be with your family tomorrow. God Blesd

Thank you for allowing me to work under your supervisor, many, many years ago at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in the library services. I remember when you call the desk and inform us, when you arrived to work that "I AM ON THE LAND." GOD REST YOUR SOUL, YOU WILL BE MISSED. Sheri Gardner-Brumskin
